    Ep 39: Photojournalist Tobin Jones & His SuperGrannies Project About A Secret Society of Grannies

    Born in Botswana to English and American parents, Tobin Jones has spent the majority of his life living on the African continent in Botswana, Malawi, Kenya and Somalia. Tobin has worked extensively throughout East and the Horn of Africa, particularly in Somalia, where for six years he documented the country's struggle with Islamic extremism, its emergence from over twenty five years of civil war, and its gradual rebuilding.

    Tobin aims to use his photography to capture stories on the continent that might otherwise be overlooked. His photo essays have covered transgender issues in Kenya, homemade prosthetics in Somalia, traditional healing in slums and the demographic makeup of Kenya. Tobin is a Co-Founder of Nonaligned, where he works with a collective of storytellers working on socially relevant, visually beautifully crafted stories for digital consumption.

    Tobin Jones’ work has appeared in multiple publications including The New York Times, The BBC, Time Magazine, The Huffington Post, and The Guardian. He has also worked for multiple international organizations and NGO's throughout the region, including UNHCR, WFP, the Danish Refugee Council, and USAID. His past photography awards include the Marty Forscher Fellowship Award, Echo Foundation Grand Prize Winner, Pride Photo Competition, and the Juror’s Choice Award in Visual Storytelling by LensCulture.

    Tobin holds a bachelor’s degree in International Development Studies with minors in Economics and Political Science from McGill University and a Master’s degree in Photojournalism from the University of Westminster in London, England.

    Sabrina Bonini is the founder and main curator of CriptoEsCultura, a platform launched in 2021 with a very clear goal: to help the Spanish-speaking community, specially female artists, in their first steps towards financial and creative self-sovereignty, educating them to get into the NFT space, promoting their NFT art and creating bridges between them and other artists, collectors and enthusiasts of this revolutionary technology, so they can succeed with the same representation and opportunities as everyone else.

    She has been working in the creative industry for more than 15 years, and has been involved and studying several artistic disciplines since a very young age. Her discovery of Blockchain, Cryptocurrencies and NFTs sparked a new passion in her. She has been studying, exploring and actively participating in the space since late 2020, enjoying its endless potential and decentralized culture and community, and experiencing first-hand the paradigm shift that NFTs entail.

    OllOOl or Abel, is a 22 year old Mexican artist, attracted and introduced to art in all its variants by his family, mostly painters and craft creators.

    From an early age he began to experiment in drawing with pencils and materials he had at hand, and gradually grew his interest in design and art, entering the career of architecture in 2018, another branch of much interest to him.

    His art is mostly made up of vibrant colors and bold color palettes, this has been evolving towards a direction of focusing on details. He tries to express emotions and sensations through lines, and colors that give an aspect of movement.

    Photojournalist for Zuma Press, photographer, storm chaser,  and humanitarian, Leslie Spurlock, has been captivating  audiences all over the world. With 21 years of experience Leslie is bold with her pictures and capturing the world through her eyes. She has covered stories all over the world  from the USA, to the Amazon, and Haiti. She got started in her photojournalism career when she decided to make a bold move and go to Haiti to do some documentary work. By 2004 she was supposed to go to Haiti for Carnaval but the uprising happened and that’s when she decided to listen to her calling and embarked on her career into photojournalism. She ended up living with the rebels for 3 weeks when they ousted  President Aristide and took over the country temporarily. She went back 4 more times, including, covering Tropical Storm Jeanne that killed 3000. After those times in Haiti she took a break from photojournalism and started shooting weddings and portraits, but her heart wasn’t in it and soon she was led back into photojournalism in 2020.She was watching the riots unfold with George Floyd and that’s when she knew in her heart that she had to make a decision. This was her life’s calling, which she could no longer ignore. It was there, that she covered 17 protests across the country. Capturing the most astonishing and captivating moments in US history. Not only was she out in the middle of the riots, but she was also involved in storm chasing. Capturing the heart of the storms  and the aftermaths of Katrina, Rita, Harvey, Laura, Ida, and Delta. She has been published worldwide including in Time, Wall Street Journal, Mother Jones, NY Post, The Guardian, Der Spiegel, Miami Herald, Austin American Statesman, Daily Mail, ABC, CNN, Yahoo and many more. Leslie Spurlock is truly gifted and talented at capturing events around the  globe and humanity through her lens and unique world of photojournalism.
