An Old Boogeyman Enters Stage Right
When in doubt, stoke fear. That’s Republican Electoral Politics 101. And it’s on full display in the GOP legislative supermajority’s xenophobic HB 4156 that would give police the power to stop “others” whom they deem potentially guilty of a new crime: “impermissible occupation.” Does anyone really think pre-World War II Germany’s “show me your papers” […]

Students Or Sprockets?
The Oklahoma Legislature’s 2024 session has had plenty of headline-grabbing moments: thwarting an attack on judicial independence, undermining The People’s initiative powers, embracing a show-me-your-papers expansion of police powers that could target almost anyone who’s not lily-white. But it’s often the legislation that flies beneath the radar that ends up with the potential to have […]

If It Ain’t Broke
There’s a wise old saying, if ain’t broke, don’t fix it. Excellent advice, of course, but often difficult for the Oklahoma Legislature to follow. So it was this spring as lawmakers seriously debate dismantling the state’s excellent system of selecting appellate judges – the Judicial Nominating Commission. On Tuesday, thankfully, the House rejected SJR 34, […]

An Observercast Reprise: For Our 2SLGBTQ+ Friends
With the recent death of Owasso High School student Nex Benedict, The Observer is re-posting the August 2023 Observercast in which therapist/counselor Paula Sophia and Freedom Oklahoma’s Nicole McAfee call out bigotry and hatred aimed at our 2SLGBTQ+ friends — and offer ways forward to support them. Sophia’s and McAfee’s powerful, illuminating conversation was recorded […]

A New Session Looms
Oklahoma legislators have 16 weeks to get it right during the legislative session — to concentrate on the concerns and issues that our state honestly, truly faces — but, if history is any indication, there’s a next to zero chance they will. For an overview of the filed legislation and what we might see in the […]

The Dark Ages Loom
Higher education in Oklahoma took it personally in December when Gov. Kevin Stitt signed an executive order to “review” all diversity, equity, and inclusion programs in the state’s public sector. Never mind DEI programs attract business and position Oklahoma students for global competitiveness, Stitt still made his move in the continuing Culture War on so-called “woke ideologies” […]

Quality Content, not sound
I really like the program since I came across it 4 episodes ago. I rave about this to all my friends and share it. I find that it is pertinent in many of my conversations to say, “I was just listening to Oklahoma Observer podcast and they were talking about this, have you heard them? You should, let me send you a link. Specifically, *this* was mentioned…” All that to say, but the sound quality does make it hard to hear. I can consider the dogs in the background as being homey and that doesn’t bother me, but sometimes it sounds like the person is underwater or they have a tinny quality and it just is not coming through in a clear manner and makes it difficult to understand and follow. I don’t have a problem listening to it repeatedly, but fear that others I share it with will not give it a chance.
