    Worker (BSW), and Meditation Teacher about breaking up toxic generational patterns. 
     
    Nina introduces herself and tells us about the work she does with families and why she began her journey.  Tess and Nina talk about the challenges that we have as parents when we go on our parenting journey and the important shifts that we as parents need to take.   Tess and Nina talk about how as parents it is important to look inside to find answers of how we can move forward. Nina talks about what generational patterns are and how they condition us.  Nina gives us some examples of some generational patterns that we may have as parents.  Tess and Nina talk about how we find out what our generational patterns are so we can look at how we can start to repair ourselves.  Nina explains the importance of finding out what is important to us when building our connection with our children and being aware of these factors as we move along on our parenting journey.  Tess and Nina talk about a strategy of how we repair our generational patterns when we are parenting daily. Nina explains to us about how we start to break these patterns after we discover them.  Nina shares with us that as parents we need to look into what we want our children to experience in childhood so we can start to look at how we parent and what we would like our parenting to look like.  Nina is most grateful for her children and tells us they awakened her and they are her greatest teachers.

    77. Raising Capable Adults

    Tess Connolly LCSW talks with Kate Garzon M.Ed, who is a "GPS" for the parents of toddlers through teens about how to raise capable adults. 
     
    Kate introduces herself and gives us some background about her experience with children and the work that she does with families.  Kate tells us about her business and how she supports families through her work.  Tess and Kate discuss how as parents our job is to raise capable adults and they talk about ways we can support our tweens and teens.  Tess and Kate talk about how we can help our tweens and teens through experiences they go through in their lives. They talk about the importance of being there for them, supporting them and being with them but not doing it for them.  They discuss the importance of not enabling our children but being a collaborative problem solver and consultant for our Tweens and Teens.  Tess and Kate talk about how we can be there as a support for our children without solving the problem for them but helping them solve the problem.  Kate offers us tips on how we can support our children as they grow through the tween and teen years.  Tess and Kate talk about giving your brain time for nothing else to do and how this then helps with emotional regulation, problem solving and critical thinking. Tess and Kate give us some examples of what this looks like for our tweens and teens and the importance of collaborative problem solving and decision making. Kate explains what “body budgets” are and the concept behind this. Dr. Lisa Feldman Barrett is the neuroscientist that came up with this concept and Dr. Mona Delahooke is now taking it and applying it to parenting and education. Tess and Kate discuss boundary setting and relationship building and how this helps our tweens and teens feel protected and safe and gives them a sense of knowing that they can come to you whenever they need support and guidance by building that connection.  Tess and Kate talk about the value of chores and service to others and Tess talks about her approach to “chores” and how her family calls them “Family Cares” and explains that “Family Cares” are about caring for the family and the family home.   Kate is most grateful for this opportunity to connect with someone else that is doing similar work and that it is lovely to collaborate and she is also grateful for their being ice cream in the freezer for later as it is 98 degrees where she is now.

    Tess Connolly LCSW talks with Helen Panos, an accomplished educator/instructional specialist with over 25 years experience in a public school system about 5 myths surrounding SAT/ACT and how to plan for your child’s success. 
     
    Helen introduces herself to us and speaks about the work she does. Tess and Helen talk about the 504 plan and what that is and how this can help with getting accommodations to help when our children take their SAT/ACT. Helen talks about what the SAT’s and ACT’s are and explains them to us and the differences between the two.  Helen talks about what the top five myths are and explains why these are myths -            1) “SAT is harder than the ACT”
              2) “Wait to take the ACT/SAT till the end of your junior year” 
              3) “Only prep for ACT/SAT if you don’t have a high GPA” 
              4) “Because they are IQ tests it is impossible to study for them” 
              5) “Test scores don’t matter because schools are test optional”
    Helen explains the test format to us. Helen talks about some of the strategies that we can use with our children.  Helen talks about encouraging parents to think ahead of time and when the best time is to start preparing for the SAT/ACT.  Helen is most grateful for being able to run a company where she can help a lot of children.

    Tess Connolly LCSW talks with Tania Lopez a Parenting Coach and a qualified and experienced hypnotherapist, counselor and teacher. They discuss conscious parenting and explain what this is and how this can help the way we parent within our families. 
     
    Tania introduces herself and tells us about the work that she does with families.  Tania explains unconscious and self-conscious parenting.  Tania and Tess discuss conscious parenting and what it is and how it can help our parenting skills.  Tania gives an example of how we can move from an unconscious place in our parenting towards a more conscious place in our parenting.  Tess and Tania discuss the changes that occur and the behaviour changes that come along when our children reach their tween and teen years.  Tess and Tania talk about parents that feel like they are to blame for their child’s behaviour because of behavior that they emulated when they were younger and that they feel like they are to blame for what they are experiencing from their own Children.   Tania talks about parents needing to unlearn what they know and enter into new learning so they can move forward in their parenting journey.   Tania talks about parents having the feeling of shame and how she works on this through her hypnotherapy sessions that she does with parents to help them release this feeling.  Tania and Tess speak about guilt and how this affects our parenting and they give us some questions that we can ask ourselves as parents to help us work through these feelings and sit in a place of curiosity.  Tess talks about it being a process and to keep making small shifts to help move your parenting skills forward.  Tania talks about her program that she offers parents and how it moves through four phases Clarity, Connection, Collaboration and Compassion.   Tania is most grateful for the work that she does and living in a climate that is so mild and all the great things that are in her life.

    Tess Connolly LCSW talks with K. Lafleur Anders who is a three times best selling author, podcast host  of “Reset with K” and founder and CEO of Chestnut Publishing House and a creative wellness coach at Lefleur-Anders and CO. They talk about the importance of family journaling and how journaling together can be a therapeutic bonding experience for the entire family. 
     
    K introduces herself and tells us about herself and how she has been led to the work that she does now.  K explains what a family journal is and how it can help with family bonding on a deeper level.  Tess and K discuss how we can introduce a journal into our families lives and how it can help with connection and create memories to hold onto.  K and Tess discuss the different types of journals that we can have in our family to help with bonding and connection and also they talk about individual journals. Tess and K talk about the benefits of journaling and how it can help with anxiety and how it offers a way for everyone to express themselves. It can be a way to connect each other to better understand what each other are going through. It provides a safe place without judgement.  Tess and K talk about different ways that we can show gratitude and connect to each other as a family. Tess talks about the importance of bearing witness to each other’s lives showing each other that we are right there for each other going through this journey together. K shares with us the thought that we all want our feelings acknowledged and how important this is to show our children ways that we do this, so it can be passed down the generations.  Tess and K talk about the impact of physically writing versus typing on a keyboard or creating voice notes.  Tess and K explain how we can make this fun and how we can present it to our family so it makes a difference within our family unit and how we need to create equal ownership, making it fun and unique to your family.  K talks about three children’s books that she recommends to families.  K tells us we deserve to have journaling as part of our lives and our families deserve another option for bonding. Writing is such a great way to express yourself and create connections.  K is most grateful for clarity because she has spent a lot of time in this life being everything for everyone else and it wasnt that she got clarity for herself that she started being a better wife and a better parent and better friend. Because of clarity she has peace.
