The Parenting Wisdom

Efrat Amira

The Parenting Wisdom Podcast is a place where we explore parenting from a truly holistic perspective. I believe that a wise parent is one who asks questions, keeps an open mind, and also trusts their deep inner knowing. Here, we integrate insights from psychology, sociology, holistic medicine, child development science, philosophy, and ancient wisdom. Because there is no single “right” way to parent — each of us is unique, and every child is a unique soul. The guiding principle of The Parenting Wisdom Podcast is that parents are their children’s leaders. And as leaders, we must be both humble and courageous as we raise children who will grow into independent, resilient, and fulfilled human beings — ready to share their unique gifts and live lives of meaning and purpose. We believe that our children are strong and capable, and that challenges are part of their growth. Our role is to let them face those challenges while remaining their safe haven — the steady presence they can always count on, no matter what.

How to Change Your Child’s Behavior_ Start With Building Character

n this episode, Efrat Amira introduces a powerful shift inspired by The Art of Elevation by Yechiel Harari: our role as parents is not just to manage behavior, but to elevate our children. Rather than reacting moment to moment, we’re invited to help our children see the good already within them—their potential, strength, and capacity for growth—while gently refining the traits that pull them off course. What You’ll Learn Why modern parenting struggles with character formation How Western thought (influenced by Rousseau) views children as inherently perfect—and why that makes discipline confusing A Jewish wisdom perspective on human nature: potential, not perfection The idea of two inner forces—self-centered instincts and higher values—and how they show up in kids Why character traits aren’t “good” or “bad,” but need balance and refinement How strong traits like confidence, assertiveness, or cheerfulness can become destructive if unbalanced What Avodat Hamidot (character work) means in everyday parenting Why changing perspective leads to emotional health—and better behavior over time The Big Idea When we help our children expand their perspective—rather than just correcting actions—their emotions shift, their behavior follows, and their character strengthens. This is how we raise children who don’t just behave well, but become well. 4. Anxiety and Depression in Kids: The Root Cause No One Talks About (And the Way To Fix It)

Anxiety and Depression in Kids: The Root Cause No One Talks About (And the Way To Fix It)

Today’s episode looks at anxiety and depression in a way most parenting conversations don’t. Even with more therapists, resources, and awareness than ever, kids are struggling at higher rates — which means the current approach is missing something essential. In this episode, we explore a deeper lens: meaning, purpose, and responsibility, based on Logotherapy and beautifully supported by Jewish wisdom about human identity. You’ll learn why many kids today feel empty, overwhelmed, or unmotivated — and what they’re really signaling beneath the surface.  In This Episode, You’ll Learn:  Why the psychological approach alone isn’t enough We cover the traditional view of anxiety and depression: * nervous system dysregulation * learned patterns * attachment wounds * developmental factors All important — but incomplete.  The “Existential Vacuum” and why so many kids feel lost You’ll learn how: * life has become *too easy* for kids * challenges that once built resilience are gone * kids lack belonging, identity, and purpose * peers and social media offer shallow connection This vacuum is at the root of many emotional struggles.  pathways to meaning (based on Jewish wisdom teachings) These four qualities define human identity and are essential for mental well-being:  1. Growth Kids need to feel themselves getting stronger and more capable. Examples: * doing hard things * practicing skills * facing fears * managing frustration * completing tasks without rescue 2.  Productivity We feel meaningful when we contribute and create. Examples: * chores * helping cook * taking care of a pet * building, crafting, gardening * having real responsibilities at home 3.  Helping Others Kids feel powerful when they know they make life better for someone else. Examples: * helping a sibling * calling grandparents * volunteering * donating toys * small daily acts of kindness 4. Genuine Relationships Kids need deep, real connection — not the superficial kind offered by screens. Examples: * family rituals * one-on-one time * communication repair * sharing family stories * playdates without screens Instead of seeing symptoms as “problems,” you’ll learn to hear your child saying: * “I need to grow.” * “I need to matter.” * “I need to contribute.” * “I need connection.” This shift empowers you to lead your home with purpose and clarity.  Key Takeaway Kids don’t just need to feel good They need to do good Meaning — not comfort — is what builds resilience, confidence, and emotional strength. 👉 Eliminate Yelling And Stess At Home. How to Stop Yelling at Your Kids: 5 Daily Habits to Stay Calm and Connected

Most people think I’m naturally patient, endlessly calm, and somehow immune to yelling or losing it with my kids. But the truth is—I’m not a superwoman. I simply built habits that support *me*, so I can show up as the parent I want to be. In this episode, I’m sharing the five life-changing habits I’ve practiced over the years that help me stay grounded, connected, and present with my children… even on really hard days. This Episode You’ll Hear About: Weekly Date Nights With My Husband Why prioritizing connection with your partner creates emotional stability at home—and how being aligned as a couple directly influences the way your kids listen and feel safe. Sitting Down to Eat (Mindfully!) A small but powerful habit that reconnects you to your body, slows down your nervous system, and brings more presence into your parenting. Limiting Social Media Time How intentional boundaries around scrolling help you avoid dopamine crashes, stay motivated, and stay genuinely present for your kids. Starting Every Morning With Yoga My 20–30 minute morning ritual that has transformed the way I feel physically and emotionally—and why moving your body makes you a more patient parent. Reading Something Inspirational Every Day The habit that carried me through years of homeschooling, difficult moments, and self-doubt… and why daily inspiration keeps your parenting aligned with your values. You don’t need to force yourself to yell less. Instead, ask: What isn’t working for me in this moment? What support do I need?” When you care for yourself, you naturally show up differently for your kids. And remember: these habits are done imperfectly. There is no perfection in parenting—only growth, compassion, and the willingness to begin again.   Mentioned in the Episode Women, Food, and God by Geneen Roth Upcoming episode on how yoga transformed my parenting (make sure to subscribe!)
