A resident of Birmingham, I am the first Alabamian known to have ever served on the prestigious council that addresses the quality of care in the United States.

On behalf of the White House Office of American Innovation, I was invited to attend the Blue Button 2.0 Developers Conference at the White House to discuss improving patient care. In addition, I am a Patients for Patient Safety U.S. Champion, a member of the National Patient Safety Board, and an active member of the Greater National Advocates Organization and Solace Health. The Basics Of Healthcare - Part 2, What Is A Diagnostic Error?

What to expect in this episode:
This is part 2 of a 2-part series that I am doing to educate, empower, and inform you as the patient.
As I stated in Part 1, this may be boring. But knowing this foundational information is instrumental in saving your life.
In this episode, I will focus on diagnostic errors. They are on the rise at an alarming rate. BMJ Quality and Safety reported that an estimated 795,000 Americans will die or are permanently disabled by diagnostic error each year. It is a healthcare crisis that no one is talking about, but you should be aware.

The Basics Of Healthcare - Part 1, What is Patient Safety?

What to expect in this episode:
This episode is part 1 of a 2-part series discussing the "basics" of health care. It might seem boring, but it is foundational. Why? Knowledge is power. You don't know what you don't know.
In this episode, I will explain what a preventable medical error is. What is a "never" event? And what is patient safety? I will include facts, research, data, and statistics to educate you, the patient.
Most people have heard the data but do not think a preventable medical error will ever happen to them...until it does.
