Eulogy for host Wayne Smith from Duncan Armstrong - G'day everybody. Duncan Armstrong here. Um, a little bit of sad news to begin this podcast, I spoke to Fran and Wayne Smith, just a couple of months ago for the podium podcast, which you're about to hear, but the sad news between recording and now Wayne has passed away. Wayne Smith was a fantastic journo for many, many years. I was speaking to my coach, Laurie Lawrence, just this week about the sad news of Wayne's passing, and he made the comment that Wayne actually was so passionate about his writing in rugby and writing for swimming, and Laurie was a Wallaby back in the day in the 60's that Wayne actually covered him as a Wallaby in rugby all the way through his coaching career all the way through to gold with, with both John, Steven, and myself, Tracy Wickham, Steve Holland, and Wayne was there every step of the way. So he has definitely affected me. I remember being on trips with him in the, in the 80's and, uh, didn't always get on with Wayne. I wasn't always happy with what he wrote about me, but he had a job to do and he was unflinching in it. And sometimes, um, I felt like I was a victim of Wayne's writing sometimes. So we had a few years off in terms of speaking to each other a couple of times. But he was always fair and he was always enthusiastic and he was a great man and a great journalist. So, uh, we're gonna miss Wayne and we just wish his family all the very, very best in going forward. It must have been a great shock, a sudden heart attack for the family. So our hearts go out to the family and we bless them. Uh, there's a sendoff for Wayne coming up in Ballymore in the next couple of weeks, which will be a fantastic way to celebrate a life in media as a great journalist, Wayne Smith. Rest in peace.
