Texas Monthly True Crime: The Problem With Erik
Erik Maund had it all. A wife and kids, a mansion by the Austin Country Club golf course, and an executive position with his family’s car dealership. But in March 2020, a message from a stranger put everything at risk. Someone knew Erik had an affair with an escort, and wanted money to keep quiet. Erik didn’t pay the money, though. He didn’t go to the cops, either. Instead, he paid Charlie Sheen’s former bodyguard and a couple of special ops-trained security contractors to confront the blackmailer. Things didn’t go according to plan. In “The Problem with Erik,” host Katy Vine and producer Ana Worrel tell the twisted story of what came next: a perfect storm of secrets, mistaken identities, and tragic miscommunications that left two people dead. From the Texas Monthly team behind “Tom Brown’s Body,” “Stephenville,” and "Shane and Sally" comes the latest true story of crime and justice in the Lone Star State. Intrigue! Amazing story of how the high and mighty are brought to justice.
Spoiler given in first episode.

“When it all feel apart”, and how, is revealed at the end of the first episode. Several podcasters do this and I think it ruins the suspense and even interest in the season.

Have listen to seasons one and five. I enjoyed the last season very much. The season about Tom Brown is very disconcerting and mystifying. I still can’t put my finger on the mother and what her story is. Of course, everyone feels bad when parent loses a child, but she broke down maybe once during the entire season at least on the recordings. What really soured me on her was during the update where the interview were asked her what she would’ve done if Tom was gay, and instead of immediately saying that she would embrace him as her child she had to think about it. And then say that she would pray about it. That was it, anyone who’s had a child and can’t unconditionally say they would embrace them regardless of the way they choose to live their life is just mind-boggling. And in this case she’s lost that child and she still couldn’t embrace the fact that he might be gay. I feel terrible for Tom Tom and he must’ve lived through it. That’s the kind of judgmental woman she is.
Another fantastic offering from Texas Monthly

This is a wonderful collection of amazing stories from the talented story tellers at Texas Monthly. I don’t know what fairy blessed TM with their amazing journalists but I’ve never once been let down, from the stories they choose to the way it’s presented to the cadence of their voices. When I don’t know what to listen to I literally search Texas Monthly and know it’s something great. HIGHLY recommend all their pods.
