The Psychobabble BCBAs

Psychobabble BCBAs

What do you get when you put two school psychology-trained BCBAs, several graduate degrees, and one shared Google Doc together? Apparently, a podcast. Welcome to Psychobabble BCBAs, a podcast about behavior analysis, psychology, and all the things we think our field needs to talk about. Hosted by Erica Ranade and Dr. Lauryn Toby, two BCBAs with roots in school psychology and more than a decade each in the field, Psychobabble BCBAs is built around a simple idea: you can deeply care about behavior analysis while examining it with a critical lens. This isn't an anti-ABA podcast. It's a pro-science, pro-client, pro-workforce podcast that refuses to confuse defending the field with defending everything the field does. Expect research and primary sources, honest disagreements, historical context, conversations with people inside and outside the field, and plenty of questions that might make you a little uncomfortable - in a good way. Psychobabble BCBAs | The RBT Uprising: Episode 3

In the third episode of The RBT Uprising, Erica and Lauryn sit down with Collin Johnson, one of the lead negotiators for the Verbal Beginnings Union 639, to hear the story directly from someone who helped organize the first RBT strike in ABA history. Colin talks about his own experience entering the field, the working conditions that pushed him toward organizing, and what it was like to take the first steps toward unionization while facing uncertainty, intimidation, and union-busting efforts. The conversation gets into the issues that brought workers to the picket line: stagnant wages, inconsistent communication, inadequate PPE and supplies, limited career advancement, supervision, unpredictable working conditions, and the enormous turnover problem facing RBTs.  What happens to continuity of care when workers walk off the job? Collin explains why the workers believe improving working conditions is ultimately part of protecting continuity of care, not opposed to it. The episode also takes a hard look at the argument that providers' hands are tied by insurance and Medicaid reimbursement rates. What happens when an organization says it can't afford higher wages while simultaneously expanding into new locations? And what responsibility do large ABA providers have to the people delivering the majority of their direct services? Psychobabble BCBAs | The RBT Uprising: Part 2

On July 20, 2026, RBTs in Rockville, Maryland made history by becoming the first ABA workers in the United States to go on strike. But the strike didn't come out of nowhere. After 437 days of bargaining without a first contract, workers were demanding guaranteed wage increases, more predictable hours, safer staffing conditions, and basic workplace protections. In this episode, Erica and Lauryn take a closer look at what led to the strike and why this story is much bigger than one clinic. They trace the short history of the RBT credential, examine the explosive growth of the ABA workforce alongside the rise of private equity, and ask whether the industry's business model was built around an increasingly replaceable workforce. They also dig into RBT turnover, unpredictable pay, limited career advancement, inadequate training, burnout, and the complicated relationship between fee-for-service reimbursement and working conditions. Can the ABA industry continue operating the way it does now? From the legacy of the 40-hour treatment model to insurance reimbursement, private equity, unionization, and the role of BCBAs, Erica and Lauryn explore how seemingly separate problems may actually be symptoms of the same systems-level issues. RBT working conditions aren't separate from clinical care. Our techs' working conditions are our clients' learning conditions. Psychobabble BCBAs | The RBT Uprising: Part 1

What happened when psychology and behavior analysis got divorced?  According to Erica and Lauryn, both sides lose something and the field of ABA is still living with the consequences. In this inaugural episode, Erica and Lauryn introduce themselves, their backgrounds in psychology and behavior analysis, and the reason they created Psychobabble BCBAs. They talk about their shared history, their complicated relationship with ABA, and their mission to bring more psychological foundations, humanity, and critical thinking into behavior-analytic practice. This podcast isn't about blindly defending ABA or tearing it down. It's about being pro-science, pro-client, and pro-workforce, while being willing to acknowledge what the field gets wrong and have the conversations that aren't always comfortable. And they're not easing into things. The first series, RBT Uprising, explores the historic 2026 RBT strike in Rockville, Maryland - the first strike in applied behavior analysis. Over the next episodes, Erica and Lauryn will examine how the RBT role was created, why burnout is so prevalent, what the research says about turnover, and what happens when the people providing support decide they've had enough. Because, as they put it: RBT working conditions are our clients' learning conditions.
