Four-quadrant films are movies designed to appeal to the biggest, widest audience possible. In the process, they can often leave out a lot of LGBTQ+ representation – but end up loaded with subtext. In The Queer Quadrant, hosts Brooke Solomon and Jordan Gustafson examine cinema in all its cultural contexts, and explore why your favorite four-quadrant blockbuster is maybe…not as straight as you think it is.

Thor: Ragnarok
Jordan and Brooke celebrate 100 whole entire episodes of the show!! And what better way to do it than with a movie that's arguably the queerest Marvel entry, Brooke's coming out film (don't ask), and peak blockbuster representation for chaotic gays everywhere?! We discuss the value (or lack thereof) of queer content in places like the MCU, Chris Hemsworth's comedy chops, Tessa Thompson's arm workout routine, bonus "Our Flag Means Death" content, and what qualifies as "retainer snapping" levels of horniness.

Fast & Furious with Matt Singer
Jordan and Brooke are joined by the great Matt Singer (ScreenCrush) to discuss Lin's 2009 "getting the gang back together" film. Aside from all the cars and homoeroticism, we chat Dom's incredible accident reconstruction vision, an excess of generic garages, SNL's "The Fast and the Bi-curious," and an always-elite enemies to lovers narrative.

Batman and Robin with Angela Ferraguto
Jordan and Brooke reunite with Angela Ferraguto for 1997's "worst comic book movie ever," aka a very colorful, fun and dynamic piece of superhero media! We talk cast & critical reception, Joel Schumacher's interpretation of the classic Batman gay subtext, Uma Thurman in a campy drag performance, HBO Max's "Harley Quinn" (obviously), and all those freeeeeeeze puns.

The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift with William Goodman
Jordan and Brooke are joined by writer William Goodman (Complex, GQ) for the Fast franchise's first jet-setting adventure. Listen to us drag Lucas Black's performance (sorry Lucas), thirst the most we have ever thirsted over Sung Kang, drop a few too many car puns, discuss Justin Lin's anime and manga influences on the action sequences, and praise a soundtrack full of absolute bangers.

Top Gun
Jordan and Brooke fly solo (but never leave your wingman) for arguably the most homoerotic film of all time – 1986's "Top Gun!" Oiled up beach volleyball, phallic symbols, and locker room scenes abound – but just how queer is this queer classic? Did Tony Scott know what he was awakening with that volleyball scene? How do we reckon with military propaganda in our cinematic outings? And is Tom Cruise the final boss of movie stardom?

2 Fast 2 Furious with Drew Gregory
Jordan and Brooke are joined by returning guest Drew Gregory (Autostraddle) to discuss the frachise's Miami-est (and gayest?) entry. Come for the deep tortured backstory between Brian and his best friend/definitely ex-lover Roman, stay for jumping cars onto boats, color coordinated whips, Tyrese ripping off his shirt at opportune times, and the incredible term "hoasis."

Two great people, one fantastic show!
Great concept, aimless discussions
I’ve listened to two episodes (Rope, Happiest Season) and I will not be returning for more. It’s a great idea for a podcast, but the discussions are so formless that the two episodes I listened to were just 3 people talking for over an hour without any plot description, games, discussion points, pauses for breaks, etc. This podcast needs an agenda so that each episode follows a similar outline. The hosts seem fine (they’re a little too film school-y rather than film scholar-y) and they seemed to have gotten guests that are better and more-informed than them (which is smart). Also, some of the movies they’ve chosen are not, and were not intended to be, blockbusters so they’re not even adhering to their own premise. Which makes sense, because—again—aimless. Disappointed.
Great Podcast!!
It the best!
