    When Athletes Skip The Anthem

    “Nothing screams entitlement quite like becoming a millionaire because of your country, then treating its national anthem like an inconvenience.”  While the WNBA Finals should be celebrating elite athletes, championship basketball, and the incredible growth of women’s sports, the conversation has once again been hijacked by politics. Players walking off the court during the national anthem, stars turning sporting events into political stages, and athletes acting as though the opportunities they enjoy appeared out of thin air speak to a bigger problem: a growing disconnect between success and gratitude. The debate isn't about blindly supporting a government. Governments come and go. It's about respecting the nation, the institutions, and the generations who fought, sacrificed, and built the freedoms that allow athletes to become global icons in the first place. Fans buy tickets to watch great basketball, not be lectured on politics. Respecting a national anthem doesn't require agreement with every policy or politician; it requires recognizing that the platform, wealth, and freedom to protest exist because others paid a price to protect them.
