The Regulated CEO

Colleen Alison

You built something real: a practice, a team, a caseload. This is where we make sure it doesn't cost you yourself. I'm Colleen: therapist, group practice owner, and I'm building the thing in real time. The Regulated CEO is where the two conversations nobody puts together finally meet the real math of scaling, and the nervous system underneath it. The hires I got wrong. The systems that gave me my evenings back. And the part almost no business content touches: what it actually feels like in your body to stop being the one who does all the work and become the one who holds it. Because you can't out-strategize a protector. And the block to scaling was never strategicit's nervous-system-deep. If you're good at what you do and quietly exhausted by the fact that being good at it just means more of it come build with me.

Ep 1: I Always Thought Private Practice Was the Finish Line

"I always thought private practice was the finish line." For over ten years, I ran a thriving private practice — private pay, my own schedule, the thing other therapists told me I was lucky to have. And I was grateful. But I was also the only employee, which meant I could never actually put it down. I piled my calendar before every vacation and after it. I worked through postpartum. I worked through my divorce. My nervous system was shot. I was a very dysregulated CEO — and a very dysregulated mom. This first episode is the origin story: how I went from believing I'd "made it" to realizing I'd built a job, not a company — and the questions that finally cracked the whole thing open. Because the only two levers I'd ever been handed were see more clients or charge more — and both of them run straight through my own body. I was finally close enough to the ceiling to see it. In this episode: • Why owning your practice can still feel like working for everyone but yourself • The real cost of being the only employee — and why "just raise your rates" is a ceiling, not a solution • My detour into coaching, and why I refused to abandon being a therapist to scale • Burnout, redefined: your nervous system's response to stress that never got to complete — and why it is NOT inevitable • "You might be the one who holds it all. But you don't always have to." The Regulated CEO is where the two conversations nobody puts together finally meet: the real math of building a practice, and the nervous system underneath it. I'm building this thing in real time — I started my group practice just last year — and I'm documenting all of it. The good, the bad, the ugly. If you own your business, or you want to, and you're tired of "successful" just meaning more of you — pull up a chair. This isn't a table I'm protecting.
