Your Child Has Been Diagnosed Autistic...Now What?

What happens after the assessment is over? After the report has been handed to you. After you’ve walked out of the consulting room. After everyone else has gone back to their lives. This episode is for that moment. In this deeply personal and practical conversation, Kay and Toyer Jappie share their family’s journey following their daughter Grace’s autism diagnosis and the lessons they wish someone had shared with them from the very beginning. Together, they explore the emotional impact of diagnosis on parents, why it’s okay to experience complex emotions, and how understanding—not fear—became the turning point in their family’s journey. Drawing on lived experience, education and neuro-affirming practice, this episode explores: •  What an autism diagnosis really means. •  Understanding the neurodivergent brain. •  Why behaviour is communication. •  Sensory processing, regulation and the nervous system. •  Why nothing about your child needs fixing. •  The difference between support that helps a child flourish and support that aims to make them appear less autistic. •  How to avoid becoming overwhelmed by therapies and appointments. •  Why parents should never outsource their relationship with their child. •  The importance of recognising strengths alongside support needs. •  How to become your child’s most informed and confident advocate. •  Why connected, collaborative care matters. •  And perhaps most importantly, why your relationship with your child remains the most powerful foundation for growth. Whether you are a parent who has just received a diagnosis, a grandparent, educator or healthcare professional, this episode offers a compassionate, evidence-informed starting point for understanding autism beyond the diagnostic report. It is an invitation to move away from fear, comparison and the pressure to “fix,” and towards curiosity, connection and genuine understanding. A Resource for Families and Professionals We hope this episode becomes more than a podcast. We hope it becomes a resource. If you’re a paediatrician, psychologist, psychiatrist, GP, speech pathologist, occupational therapist, educator or any professional supporting neurodivergent children and their families, we invite you to share this episode with parents following a diagnosis. Sometimes the most valuable thing we can offer a family isn’t another report. It’s a conversation that helps them feel understood, informed and less alone as they begin this journey. Because no family should leave a diagnosis carrying uncertainty on their own. Welcome to The Regulated Parent.

Co-Regulation: Why Connection Comes before Correction

Episode 5: Co-Regulation – Why Connection Comes Before Correction In this episode of The Regulated Parent, Toyer and Kay Jappie explore the science and heart of co-regulation, the process through which children learn emotional regulation through safe, connected relationships. Drawing on over 70 years of parenting experience between them, alongside the best available evidence in developmental neuroscience, they unpack why behaviour is often a reflection of the nervous system rather than simply a choice, why connection comes before correction, and how emotional regulation develops over time. Together, they discuss: •  What co-regulation really is and what it isn’t. •  Why children aren’t born knowing how to regulate their emotions. •  How understanding the nervous system changes the way we see behaviour. •  Why neurodivergent children, including autistic children, children with ADHD, and those with different sensory and developmental pathways, particularly benefit from co-regulation. •  The role of culture, community and relationships in helping children feel safe enough to thrive. •  Practical ways parents can begin using the REGULATE™️ Framework in everyday family life. This episode weaves together developmental science, lived experience, and heartfelt conversation, offering parents, grandparents, educators, therapists, and healthcare professionals a hopeful and evidence-informed perspective on raising emotionally healthy children. 🎁 Free Companion Guide To accompany this episode, we’ve created our beautifully designed Companion Guide: Co-Regulation  Why Connection Comes Before Correction. Episode 2 : Beyond Behaviour - Why Children Are So Overwhelmed

In Episode 2 of The Regulated Parent  “Beyond Behaviour: Why Children Are So Overwhelmed” Toyer and Kay explore the growing emotional, sensory, and nervous-system overwhelm many children are experiencing in modern life. The Regulated Parent is a podcast by GRACIA Collective, hosted by Toyer and Kay, exploring parenting, emotional wellbeing, nervous systems, sensory experiences, relationships, and modern childhood through reflective, compassionate, scientifically informed, and neuro-inclusive conversations. Drawing from lived experience, research, neuro-inclusive perspectives, and reflective parenting conversations, this episode explores how behaviour is often communication rather than simply something to control or correct. Together, they unpack the many interconnected factors shaping children’s wellbeing today including nervous-system regulation, sensory processing, emotional safety, relationships, stress, sleep, development, overstimulation, environment, modern pressures, and the physiological impact chronic overwhelm can have on children’s bodies and emotional worlds. This episode also explores why some children appear “fine” at school but completely unravel at home, the hidden exhaustion many children carry internally, and why parenting conversations need to become broader, more compassionate, more thoughtful, and more scientifically informed. Rather than reducing children to “just behaviour,” “just parenting,” “just trauma,” or “just diagnosis,” this conversation reflects on the importance of seeing children as whole human beings shaped by many interacting experiences, environments, nervous systems, and developmental realities. The episode also introduces Episode 3, featuring specialist paediatrician, author, and entrepreneur Dr Lethabo Machaba, who will join the conversation to explore gut health, inflammation, stress, emotional wellbeing, physiology, and the connection between children’s nervous systems, bodies, and modern childhood experiences. A reflective and compassionate conversation for parents, caregivers, educators, and professionals seeking to better understand children beyond behaviour alone. Because perhaps the question is not: “What is wrong with children?” But rather: “What kind of world are children developing inside?”
