The Science Behind Sewing and Fiber Arts

Send a text In this episode, we’re threading the needle between creativity and chemistry as we introduce our new science elective: The Science Behind Sewing and Fiber Arts. Callie Palmer and Lavender Krupp talk to teacher/creator, Mrs. Allison Mills, about this foundational course that weaves together crafting, culture, environmental science, art, and hands-on craftsmanship to explore the fascinating world of textiles. The conversation covers how students don’t just learn how to sew in this class - they investigate the science of plant and animal fibers, research real-world careers in fiber arts, and experiment with local plants to create natural dyes. From hand stitching and machine sewing to fiber processing and sustainable textile labs, this course blends innovation with tradition. Rooted in STEAM principles, the class emphasizes recycling, sustainability, and environmental responsibility while encouraging creativity and technical skill.  If you are interested in signing up for this class, this episode is the one for you. Join us as we explore how art, science, and sustainability come together—one stitch at a time. This episode was edited by Ace F. and sound recorded by Ollie S.
