The Gift of Desperation: Finding Hope in Sobriety

In this powerful episode of The Ryan Zofay Experience, Ryan sits down with Tanner Conroy, a former patient turned alumni coordinator at We Level Up, to share his incredible story of resilience, redemption, and purpose. Tanner grew up in a supportive family with sports at the center of his world. But with a father who was a celebrated athlete, Tanner carried the silent weight of expectations. By high school, the pressure pushed him toward partying and smoking weed, and slowly his dreams on the baseball diamond began to fade. He found a new path in football, even excelling in college. But when the games ended and the structure disappeared, so did his sense of identity. Without goals to chase, Tanner fell deeper into drinking. What started as “normal college partying” spiraled into full-blown addiction. He lost jobs, relationships, and the trust of those who believed in him.. even being fired from a high school coaching position he loved because of drinking. In his words, he reached the “gift of desperation.” Miserable, hopeless, and convinced he had let everyone down, Tanner finally picked up the phone and called for help. That call led him to We Level Up, where he entered treatment as a broken man. But instead of being defined by his rock bottom, Tanner began rebuilding. Fast forward nearly three years sober, Tanner is now a husband, a father, a homeowner, and an alumni coordinator helping others walk the same path he once walked. His story is living proof that, as Ryan says, “Just because it’s not working the way we want doesn’t mean it’s not working. Most people quit before the miracle happens.” Together, Ryan and Tanner unpack: • The heavy weight of family expectations and how it can shape identity. • The fine line between “normal college life” and addiction. • Why purpose and growth are essential to staying sober. • The role of community and alumni support in long-term recovery. • How the promises of sobriety can transform not just one life, but entire families. This conversation is raw, real, and full of hope. Whether you’re in recovery, supporting a loved one, or simply looking for inspiration, Tanner’s story is a reminder that rock bottom can be the start of something beautiful. 👉 Tune in now, and don’t quit before your miracle happens.
