    Transat Jaques Vabres Race

Abby’s guest on this episode is Justine Mettraux, a Swiss sailor who grew up navigating the waters of Lake Geneva with her four siblings. She began sailing competitively as a teenager, before quickly rising through the ranks as one to watch. In 2013, she came second in the Mini-Transat before joining the all-female crew onboard Team SCA, led by offshore sailing legend, Sam Davies, for the 2014-15 Volvo Ocean Race. Justine officially joined 11th Hour Racing Team in 2021, following a transatlantic training run with the crew in 2020. She will co-skipper the team’s existing IMOCA 60, known as 11th Hour Racing Team - ALAKA'I, with British navigator, Simon Fisher. They are currently leading the IMOCA Globe Series so will be a strong contender going into the Transat Jaques Vabres Race, a double handed race from Normandie, France to the Caribbean Island of Martinique. To kick off this episode Abby taps into the knowledge and experience of record breaking sailor Dee Caffari to seek her insights into who we should be looking out for in this tactical and exciting race across the Atlantic. Susann Beucke and Erica Dawson's Olympic Journey

On this month’s episode Abby talks to two sailors who have had very different journeys to the Tokyo Olympic Games. Her first guest is Susann Beucke from Germany, for which Tokyo was her third attempt to compete at the Games. Susann has campaigned in the 470 class and most recently has competed in the 49erFX class, winning the European Championships in 2020 and going on to win an Olympic silver medal at Tokyo. Susann shares her highlights and lowlights of her long road to Tokyo. Abby's second guest is Erica Dawson from Aukland, New Zealand, competing in her first Olympic Games in the Nacra 17 class, a mixed crew, foiling catamaran with Micah Wilkinson. Erica’s dream of going to an Olympic Games were initially in the 49erFX but she switched to the foiling catamaran in 2018, firstly as helm, before teaming up with Micah in the middle of 2019 and switching to crew. The pair showed their huge potential when finishing seventh at the Nacra 17 World Championships in Geelong, Australia and they are coached by two-time Olympic medallist Jo Aleh. Erica suffered a huge setback in training five weeks out from the Games, and we hear about the incident, her coping strategy and her experience at Tokyo. Impressions of The Ocean Race Europe

Abby chats to three sailors; Annie Lush, Lara Poljšak and Annika Möslein, all of whom have recently competed in the The Ocean Race Europe, which started on May 29 from Lorient and finished in Genoa on June 19. The Europe race is a new event designed to showcase top-flight, fully-crewed, competitive ocean racing featuring crew members from all over the world racing in foiling IMOCA 60s and one-design VO65s. Annie has competed in two Volvo Ocean Races with Team SCA and Team Brunel. She was part of Team Offshore Germany competing in The Ocean Race Europe.  Lara originates from Slovenia and is relatively new to Offshore racing and keen to get more into ocean racing with The Ocean Race being her dream goal.  Lara is currently part of the Magenta’s mentorship program. Annika hails from Germany, currently residing in the UK where she is studying at Oxford.  She had her first taste of the VO65 following a delivery opportunity after the 2017/18 Ocean Race onboard Sun Hung Kai/Scallywag. Annika was part of the 2018/19 Magenta mentoring program. Both Annika and Lara competed The Ocean Race Europe on board The Austrian Ocean Race Project.
