Through honest conversations, body-based tools, and grounded discussions around burnout, identity, chronic stress, and constant readiness, this podcast helps you understand why the pattern keeps returning, and what it takes for change to finally hold. If you are exhausted but can’t slow down, tired in a way rest hasn’t fixed, or carrying more than your body knows how to recover from, this is for you. kelseyhire.substack.com

Decode Your Survival Mode: The Stone Turtle

In this episode, I’m getting into the final archetype in the Decode Your Survival Mode series, the Stone Turtle. If you’ve lost hours to scrolling or sleeping without quite knowing where the time went, or people describe you as easygoing and you’re not sure that’s the right word, this one’s for you. I talk about: * What the Stone Turtle pattern actually is, the dorsal vagal shutdown response that makes disappearing feel safer than staying exposed * A story from the year after my Poland deployment, when my body simply stopped negotiating with me, and how we found real, physical answers underneath what turned out to be a nervous system in full collapse * Why this pattern gets hooked on absence, on the specific chemistry of not feeling, and why screens, sleep, and scrolling are so often where Stone Turtles go when they’re overwhelmed * How this pattern shows up differently in women and men, and why it tends to go the longest unnamed in men specifically * What’s happening in your body at the biological level, the most ancient branch of the nervous system, the one that comes online when fight and flight have both already failed Plus, I’m walking through real regulation tools for this specific archetype: taking in one sense at a time, safe and gentle movement, titrating presence in small increments, co-regulation with a safe person, and the five percent practice that works in reverse for this pattern. This episode will help you understand why disappearing was once the most intelligent response you had, and why coming back doesn’t require a sprint, it requires evidence, gathered slowly, that presence is survivable. You’ll Learn: * Why rest doesn’t always feel like relief, and why coming back into your body can feel like walking into a room where something difficult is waiting * How to tell the difference between a body that’s lazy and a body that’s in conservation mode * Why going straight from shutdown to full presence backfires, and what small increments work instead * Simple tools that remind your body it’s still here without overwhelming it * Why being near a calm, regulated person is one of the most powerful tools available for this specific pattern Mentioned in This Episode: * The Survival Archetypes™ Quiz → www.pathtotruenorth.com * Learn more about retreats and one-on-one nervous system support → pathtotruenorth.com/retreats and @thetruenorthresilientwoman on IG Want to go deeper? If this episode hit home, make sure to: * Subscribe so you don’t miss what’s next in the series * Share it with someone who tends to just quietly disappear * Rate it so I can help more people find it * Tag @thetruenorthresilientwoman on IG and tell me if you saw yourself in this one Get full access to The Burnout Chronicles at kelseyhire.substack.com/subscribe

Decode Your Survival Mode: The Bracing Bear

In this episode, I’m getting into the fourth archetype in the Decode Your Survival Mode series, the Bracing Bear. If you’re the one everyone calls the strong one, and you have no idea what you’d be if you weren’t, this one’s for you. I talk about: * What the Bracing Bear pattern actually is, a blend of freeze and fawn that holds everything together on the outside while quietly collapsing on the inside * A story from my first deployment to Iraq, fifteen months long, where I stepped in to carry something my body never sent me the bill for until years later * Why this pattern’s addiction doesn’t look like an addiction at all, it looks like being fine, and what’s actually happening chemically when your body dials sensation down to keep you functional * How this pattern shows up differently in women and men, and the core belief driving it in each case * What’s happening in your body at the biological level, wired and tired at the same time, caught between sympathetic activation and dorsal vagal shutdown Plus, I’m walking through real regulation tools for this specific archetype: anchoring practices, gentle movement, microdosing expression, vagal toning, and two reflection questions worth sitting with if you recognize yourself in this one. This episode will help you understand why exhaustion isn’t failure, it’s communication, and why your worth was never supposed to be measured by how much you could carry without anyone seeing it. You’ll Learn: * Why rest can feel irresponsible, and why asking for help can feel like abandoning your post * How to tell the difference between a body that’s composed and a body that’s braced * Why the earliest signals your body sends get overridden, and what happens when they finally get loud enough to ignore * Simple tools that help you re-enter your own experience instead of suppressing it further * Why saying “I’m tired” without immediately following it with reassurance is actually progress Mentioned in This Episode: * The Survival Archetypes™ Quiz → www.pathtotruenorth.com * Learn more about retreats and one-on-one nervous system support → pathtotruenorth.com/retreats and @thetruenorthresilientwoman on IG Want to go deeper? If this episode hit home, make sure to: * Subscribe so you don’t miss the next archetype drop * Share it with someone everyone calls the strong one * Rate it so I can help more people find it * Tag @thetruenorthresilientwoman on IG and tell me if you saw yourself in this one Get full access to The Burnout Chronicles at kelseyhire.substack.com/subscribe

Decode Your Survival Mode: The Feeling Fawn

In this episode, I’m getting into the third archetype in the Decode Your Survival Mode series, the Feeling Fawn. If you’re the one who remembers everyone’s needs but no one quite remembers yours, this one’s for you. I talk about: * What the Feeling Fawn pattern actually is, survival through appeasement rather than fight or freeze * A story from my deployment to Poland, the darkest period of my adult life, where my nervous system stopped fighting and started disappearing instead * Why saying no can feel genuinely dangerous, and the dopamine, oxytocin, and relief cocktail your brain releases every time you keep the peace * How this pattern shows up differently in women and men, and the core belief driving it in each case * What’s happening in your body at the biological level, from a social engagement system stuck in overdrive to an amygdala that treats disapproval like physical danger Plus, I’m walking through real regulation tools for this specific archetype: orienting inward before outward, expressive movement that belongs to you, microdosing the no, backing off five percent, and safe co-regulation that doesn’t cost you anything to receive. This episode will help you understand why your warmth was never supposed to cost you yourself, and why your body isn’t broken, it’s just been disappearing to stay safe. You’ll Learn: * Why rest can feel selfish instead of restful, and where that belief actually comes from * How to tell the difference between a body punishing you and a body finally telling you the truth * Why going straight from lifelong appeasement to full boundaries backfires, and what small experiments work instead * Simple tools that teach your body it’s allowed to orient toward its own needs first * Why boundaries aren’t walls, they’re the thing that lets you actually be present instead of just performing presence Mentioned in This Episode: * The Survival Archetypes™ Quiz → www.pathtotruenorth.com * Learn more about retreats and one-on-one nervous system support → pathtotruenorth.com/retreats and @thetruenorthresilientwoman on IG Want to go deeper? If this episode hit home, make sure to: * Subscribe so you don’t miss the next archetype drop * Share it with someone who’s always the one everyone else leans on * Rate it so I can help more people find it * Tag @thetruenorthresilientwoman on IG and tell me if you saw yourself in this one Get full access to The Burnout Chronicles at kelseyhire.substack.com/subscribe

Decode Your Survival Mode: The Worry Wolf

In this episode, I’m getting into the second archetype in the Decode Your Survival Mode series, the Worry Wolf. If you’re the one who’s always three steps ahead, double-checking what’s already been checked, and still lying awake replaying the day, this one’s for you. I talk about: * What the Worry Wolf pattern actually is, the hypervigilant, freeze-adjacent state that runs on control instead of adrenaline * A story from commanding convoy operations in Afghanistan, where staying composed under real threat cost my body more than I realized until the mission was over * Why control brings relief but never rest, and the dopamine and GABA loop that keeps you scanning even when nothing’s wrong * How this pattern shows up differently in women and men, and the core belief driving it in each case * What’s happening in your body at the biological level, from a hair-trigger amygdala to a vagus nerve that’s lost its tone Plus, I’m walking through real regulation tools for this specific archetype: loosening the grip somatically, discharge-based movement, microdosing uncertainty, vagal toning, and writing the scan down when your brain won’t stop circling. This episode will help you understand why composure isn’t the same as calm, and why your body isn’t broken, it’s just forgotten how to stand down. You’ll Learn: * Why rest feels reckless instead of restorative, and where that belief actually comes from * How to tell the difference between a nervous system that’s protecting you and one that’s just tired of bracing * Why going straight from full control to total trust backfires, and what small experiments work instead * Simple tools that teach your body that imperfection doesn’t equal danger * Why peace isn’t the absence of uncertainty, it’s the presence of safety even inside it Mentioned in This Episode: * The Survival Archetypes™ Quiz → www.pathtotruenorth.com * Learn more about retreats and one-on-one nervous system support → pathtotruenorth.com/retreats and @thetruenorthresilientwoman on IG Want to go deeper? If this episode hit home, make sure to: * Subscribe so you don’t miss the next archetype drop * Share it with someone who’s always the one holding it all together * Rate it so I can help more people find it * Tag @thetruenorthresilientwoman on IG and tell me if you saw yourself in this one Get full access to The Burnout Chronicles at kelseyhire.substack.com/subscribe

What Is Survival Mode? (And Why You Can’t Just “Think” Your Way Out of It)

In this episode, I’m getting into what survival mode actually is, not the version that gets thrown around as a buzzword, but the lived, physiological experience of it. If you’ve ever performed strength for years while something quietly came apart underneath, this one’s for you. I talk about: * What survival mode really means from a nervous system perspective, including the states beyond fight or flight * Why chaos can start to feel like home once your body has been in overdrive long enough, and why that’s biology, not a character flaw * Fifteen-plus symptoms that show up in your body, mind, and relationships, most of which get blamed on something else entirely * How trauma, prolonged stress, and even years of high performance can wire you for collapse without you ever noticing it happening Plus, I’m introducing the five-part series you won’t want to miss: Decode Your Survival Mode, where I break down the five core Survival Archetypes™, patterns you’ve probably never had language for but have absolutely felt in your body. This series will help you see your own pattern clearly, stop treating your body like it’s the problem, and start the slow work of rebuilding differently. You’ll Learn: * Why the state you’re in determines the way out of it, and why generic nervous system advice can backfire depending on your pattern * How to tell the difference between a body that’s broken and a body that’s braced * What dysregulation actually looks like physically, mentally, and emotionally, not just the version people talk about online * Why you can hit a season that looks good on paper and still crash right in the middle of it * Why slowing down can feel more dangerous than staying in motion, and what that’s actually telling you about your nervous system Mentioned in This Episode: * The Survival Archetypes™ Quiz → www.pathtotruenorth.com * Learn more about retreats and one-on-one nervous system support → pathtotruenorth.com/retreats and @thetruenorthresilientwoman on IG Want to go deeper? If this episode hit home, make sure to: * Subscribe so you don’t miss the next archetype drop * Share it with someone who’s quietly holding everything together * Rate it so I can help more people find it * Tag @thetruenorthresilientwoman on IG and tell me which symptom hit you hardest Get full access to The Burnout Chronicles at kelseyhire.substack.com/subscribe
