    In this episode, we discuss the intersection of healthcare, business, and technology with Dr. Yousuf Zafar, a gastrointestinal medical oncologist and Associate Professor of Medicine, Public Policy and Population Health Science at the Duke Cancer Institute, and the Duke Margolis Center for Health Policy.     Health Policy and Early Childhood Development (Ep. 3)

    There are a number of factors that affect a child’s development, such as genes and the provision of direct health care services. However, from what we gather so far, it is family, social and community influences that play the greatest role in influencing children’s growth. In our last episode, Dr. Kelly Kelleher talked about efforts to shift healthcare to a more community-based versus a strictly pediatric-based approach. To do this, we will need to think about how we can expand and scale up effective evidence-based practices. But how can we build collaboration between different stakeholders in our community? Have there been successful case studies that demonstrate effective collaborations? What lessons can we learn from the success of Medicare in reducing health-related poverty among our elderly population, and how can these insights direct policy in targeting poverty as a leading cause of poor health among children? To explore these questions – and more – we will be interviewing Dr. James Perrin, a professor of pediatrics at Harvard Medical School and the former director of the Division of General Pediatrics at Massachusetts General Hospital, an internationally renowned academic research division focused on improving the health of children and adolescents.     Health Policy and Early Childhood Development (Ep. 2)

    In our last episode on “Health Policy and Early Childhood Development”, we talked in general about the trends and challenges in children’s development and policy. One major trend that we discussed was that although infant mortality rates have decreased over the years, there has been an uptick in neurodevelopmental and mental health disorders among children and adolescents. Because these disordersare heavily influenced by a child’s community and environment -unsurprisingly -evidence shows that family, social and community-based measures of health care are one of the most effective ways ofaddressing the onslaught of these non-infectious, chronic conditions.  Another challenge that we discussed in our last episode, however, was how to scale up evidence-based programs. There is a number of promising community-based programs in place –but how can this be adopted to serve different communities in a cost-effective way? In today’s episode, we will revisit these observations with Dr. Kelly Kelleher, Principal Investigator and Vice President of Community Health at Nationwide Children’s Hospital in Columbus, Ohio.     Health Policy and Early Childhood Development

    In this episode, we briefly touch on discoveries about the nature of early childhood development, using this as a launchpad to discuss the trends we have seen in children’s health and well-being from a population health perspective. Infant mortality is decreasing, overall, but this fact by no means gives us a good picture of children’s development and health, and where health policy stands on this matter. Practicing pediatrics and pulmonary medicine since the 1960s and having served in a number of leadership positions – such as President of the American Board of Pediatrics, the Society for Pediatric Research and chair of the Department of Pediatrics at the University of North Carolina -- Dr. Thomas F. Boat is incisive in his reflections on the current landscape for early childhood development, on challenges the health systems need to address, and on where policy stands.
