Jamie Stedman: Improving your Mindset and Mental Health

CW: Suicide is discussed briefly in this podcast. Jamie ‘Stedo’ Stedman is a mental health facilitator and mindset coach who works with individuals and groups to help them stay well, both inside and outside the workplace. In this chat Stedo talks about his own mental health journey that began after a major health episode left him in a coma. Once he was out of the coma, he started to develop the symptoms of depression. Meanwhile, he had many people (with the best of intentions) telling him he “should have a new lease on life!”, which only made him feel worse. We talk about the dangers of the word “should”, paying attention to mental health, paying attention to your thoughts, failure, guilt, imposter syndrome, self worth and mindfulness. Check out more from Stedo on Instagram at @jamiestedo or on his website at jamiestedman.net Also mentioned on this podcast: Episode 9, Catherine Rains: Realign Your Life by Letting Go of Resistance and Following your Joy Episode 3, Grace Bell: The Work of Byron Katie, Binge Eating, Divorce and Finding Peace. Catherine Rains: Realign Your Life by Letting Go of Resistance and Following Your Joy

Catherine Rains went from a job she truly hated as a university career counsellor, to becoming an (almost) full-time artist by doing two things: letting go of inner resistance, and following her joy. Today, she spends 5 days a month working as a trainer for the Myers Briggs company, which takes a bit of pressure off her art and allows her to focus on the joy of what she does, which she considers not just art, but “an offering”. It’s amazing to think that when Catherine started with her art she didn’t believe herself to be an “artsy” person, and had no idea where it would lead! Catherine says, “If you don’t resist where you are, the universe realigns you to where you’re supposed to be”. In our chat she explains how the process of releasing inner resistance really works (and it’s not just a matter of “positive thinking”!), and how following the joy in life can clear a path. She explains, “Even if it’s not the path, it’s a path to the path!” The main takeaways I took from this chat are: How to stop fighting with your life and let go of inner resistance, and why it matters. That it’s sometimes easier to let go of resistance in big, earth-shattering events rather than when experiencing “low grade chronic misery”. How following your joy leads you to new and unexpected paths, and what the process actually looks like. Grace Bell on The Work of Byron Katie, Binge Eating, Divorce, and Finding Peace.

Grace Bell is a certified facilitator of The Work of Byron Katie, where she helps individuals and groups to explore their most stressful beliefs and investigate their resistance through a process known as ‘The Work’. She has a Masters in Applied Behavioural Science, has two adult children, and lives in Seattle, Washington. In this podcast episode, I speak to Grace about how The Work has helped reduce the stress and resistance in her own life, particularly in relation to the events of her past, which included binge eating, anxiety, divorce, and at one point, money and employment issues. For those unfamiliar with The Work, it is a process of inquiry created by Byron Katie where a person looks at a single, troubling thought relating to a particular moment in time, and asking themselves four questions: Is it true; can you absolutely be sure that it’s true; how do you react, what happens when you believe that thought, and; who would you be without that thought? The inquirer is  then asked to explore the thought in new ways, which Grace refers to as ‘turnarounds’.
