    How do we make sense of tragedy—especially when it results from years of poor choices? In this episode of The Sift, Nathan and Jeff discuss the death of Saul and his sons in 1 Samuel 31. Saul’s downfall was not a sudden accident, but the tragic end of a long pattern of disobedience and unrepentant sin. Yet his story also reveals God’s remarkable patience and reminds us not to delay repentance. The discussion contrasts Saul with David, whose years of waiting and hardship prepared him to lead with greater humility and character. Nathan and Jeff also consider the danger of despair, the hope available in Christ, and the courage of the men of Jabesh-gilead, who refused to let Saul’s final failures erase every good thing that had come before.     Episode 35: What to Do When Problems Stack Up

    What do you do when one problem follows another and life’s troubles begin to stack up? In this episode of The Sift, Nathan and Jeff turn to 1 Samuel 30, where David returns to Ziklag and finds the city burned and the families of his men taken captive. At one of the lowest moments of his life, David strengthens himself in the Lord, seeks God’s direction, and sets out in pursuit. The result is a remarkable rescue in which everything that had been taken is restored. The chapter also reveals something about the generous grace of God. David insists that the spoils be shared equally, even with those who could not continue into battle. In the same way, salvation is not earned by our strength or effort but given freely through Jesus Christ. When troubles pile up—or when you have wandered far—pause, pray, and turn again to the Lord.     Episode 34: How Does God Respond When We Make a Mess?

    What does God do when our own choices leave us trapped in a situation we cannot escape on our own? In 1 Samuel 29, David finds himself marching with the Philistine army as it prepares to fight Israel. After sixteen months of hiding among Israel’s enemies, David now faces the possibility of fighting against his own people. Yet God provides an unexpected way out through the objections of the Philistine commanders.In this episode of The Sift, Nathan and Jeff consider the deceitfulness of sin, the sovereignty of God, and the surprising ways God delivers his people. They also explain the heart of the gospel: we cannot rescue ourselves, but Jesus has done everything necessary to reconcile us to God. God’s faithfulness does not excuse David’s sin or remove every consequence, but it shows that our failures cannot overturn his purposes. Even when his people are faithless, God remains faithful.     Episode 33: Looking for Answers in the Wrong Places

    What happens when someone repeatedly rejects the Lord? In 1 Samuel 28, Saul faces an enemy and wants God’s guidance. But he does not want to repent, surrender, or obey. After rejecting God’s Word from the prophet, killing the priests, and turning on David, Saul discovers that heaven is silent. Desperate for another voice, he turns to a medium or witch at Endor and receives a message of judgment rather than hope. In this episode, Nathan and Jeff consider the danger of seeking direction from God without submission to God, or looking for guidance while neglecting Scripture, and treating God like a consultant rather than Lord.     Episode 32: What Are the Signs of Spiritual Fatigue?

    When pressure has lasted longer than we expected, spiritual fatigue can begin to shape the way we think and live. In 1 Samuel 27–28, David’s weariness shows itself in prayerlessness, despair, self-reliance, and decisions driven by the desire for immediate relief. Rather than seeking the Lord, he listens to fearful thoughts and finds refuge among the Philistines, drawing others into the danger of his compromise. This episode considers the warning signs of a weary soul and the need to preach God’s promises to ourselves. Yet David’s failure is not the final word: God remains faithful to His promises.     Episode 31: Are You Confident in the Lord?

    As Saul closes in once more, David’s confidence in the Lord is becoming clearer. In 1 Samuel 26, David and Abishai enter Saul’s camp, yet David refuses the easy shortcut of killing the king. Instead, he trusts the Lord to fulfill His promise in His time. That trust gives David both restraint and courage: restraint not to sin when opportunity is near, and courage to speak honestly to Saul and Abner afterward. David also shows that forgiveness is not gullibility; Saul’s words of regret do not erase a repeated pattern of betrayal. This episode considers how confidence in God is forged in hardship and enables us to face conflict with self-control, discernment, honesty, and peace - remembering that the Lord sees and rewards faithfulness today.     Episode 29: Is it Okay to Get Revenge?
