    Rethinking Public Opinion - A Conversation with Christian Baden, Nina Springer and Agnieszka Stępińska

    In this episode, we discuss how public opinion is formed and negotiated in digital media environments, and why many established approaches to studying online discourse fall short. Our guests, Prof. Christian Baden, Dr. Nina Springer, and Prof. Agnieszka Stepinska, introduce the OPINION project, an international COST Action that brings together researchers to rethink public opinion at the intersection of theory, methods, and digital infrastructures. Rather than treating public opinion as an aggregate of individual attitudes, OPINION conceptualizes it as a process of discursive negotiation shaped by platform-specific arenas, sociotechnical logics, and unequal distributions of visibility and voice. The episode explores the theoretical foundations of this approach, as well as the collaborative challenges and possibilities of building interdisciplinary, multilingual research networks in the digital age.

    כיצד נראית תיאוריית מדיה כשחושבים עליה לא דרך מודלים מופשטים של מסר ותקשורת, אלא דרך דמויות מיתולוגיות? בפרק זה אנחנו מארחים את פרופ’ עמית פינצ’בסקי, ראש המחלקה לתקשורת באוניברסיטה העברית, ואת יואל בוטביניק, דוקטורנט במחלקה ואחד העורכים של מגזין סף, לשיחה לרגל פרסום הטקסט המשותף שלהם בגיליון החדש של מגזין סף, תשתית:תנועה, תחת הכותרת "המיתולוגיה של התיווך". דרך חיבור בין תיאוריית מדיה למיתולוגיה יוונית, ודרך דמותה של הקטה, אלת הצמתים והסיפים, הם מציעים לחשוב מחדש על תיווך, מדיה ותשתיות דרך אזורי מעבר ולימינליות. במהלך הפרק אנחנו חוזרים אל הבחירה לחשוב מדיה דרך מיתוס, ואל הצורך לזמן דווקא את הקטה אל לב הדיון העכשווי. נדבר על משמעותם של צמתים ומצבי בין-לבין בשדה תיאוריית המדיה ובמחקר האישי של כל אחד מהם. מתוך מיתוס פרספונה ודמטר נבחין בפיצול בין ראייה לשמיעה, בין עדות חזותית לבין עדות קולית, ונרחיב על המקום המשתנה של מדיה מבוססי קול לעומת מדיה מבוססי תמונה, על הדהוד, מהימנות והיבטים מגדריים של חוויית התקשורת. לבסוף, נמתח קו מן המיתולוגיה אל ההווה הדיגיטלי: איך נראית לימינליות ברוח הקטה בעידן של רשתות ואלגוריתמים, איפה נמצאים היום הצמתים של המדיה הדיגיטלית, ואיזה מקום נותר למבוכה, בלבול ושהייה בדרך בעולם שמחפש מהירות וחלקות. לאתר של מגזין סף - https://saf-mag.com/

    Generations, Memes, and the Values of Digital Culture – A Conversation with Tommaso Trillò

    In this episode, we explore how memes serve as windows into the evolving logics of generation, value, and belonging in digital culture. Our guest, Dr. Tommaso Trillò, Senior Lecturer in the Department of Communication and Journalism at the Hebrew University and former postdoctoral researcher in prof. Limor Shifman’s ERC project DigitalValues, joins us for a conversation about the everyday aesthetics of internet humor and what they reveal about how people inhabit platforms today. We begin by discussing two emblematic meme genres — Good Morning memes and POV memes — each drawing on different social and technological ecologies. Through these cases, Trillò shows how meme cultures articulate generational logics and values in everyday digital life. Good Morning memes, circulating mostly through family group chats on platforms like WhatsApp and Facebook, reveal how older users express care and social presence through repetitive and affective visual forms. POV memes, emerging from TikTok’s short-video culture, highlight how younger users explore identity, affiliation, and shared experience within algorithmically curated spaces. Together, these examples offer a glimpse into how digital media sustain diverse modes of community and expression across generations. The conversation expands to consider how values such as authenticity, identity, and affiliation become encoded in digital images and vernaculars, following insights from the DigitalValues project. We examine how memes act not only as humorous artifacts but also as cultural texts that negotiate what users find meaningful, desirable, or genuine online. Finally, we discuss the broader theoretical frameworks of platform vernaculars, platform politics, and platform imaginaries — exploring how users adapt to the constraints and invitations of specific platforms like Facebook, Instagram, and TikTok, and how these spaces, in turn, shape both aesthetic norms and generational imaginaries. The episode concludes with reflections on the professionalization of content creation and the transformation of social media from spaces of personal communication to algorithmically curated environments of performance and aspiration.

    כיצד נראית תחיית העברית כשמסתכלים עליה לא רק כנרטיב תרבותי או סיפור היסטורי, אלא כתהליך טכנו-לשוני מלא כשלים, אילוצים והמצאות? בפרק הזה אנחנו מארחים את ד"ר עידו רמתי לשיחה על המופעים הפחות מוכרים של העברית במפגש עם מדיה, טכנולוגיות תקשורת ומכונות במובן הכי מילולי של המילה. במהלך הפרק אנחנו עוקבים אחר הדרך שבה טכנולוגיות המדיה החדשות של המאה התשע עשרה הופיעו במקביל לתהליך החידוש או התחייה המואץ של העברית, משפת קודש לשפה דבורה. הופעה מקבילה זו לא הייתה רק מקרה, אלא תהליך עומק של שזירה והשפעה הדדית בין עיצוב הממשקים הטכנולוגיים החדשים ובין הופעת העברית מחדש על במת ההיסטוריה. העברית נאלצה להתאים את עצמה — או להתעקש על ייחודיותה — כדי להשתלב במכונות כתיבה שתוכננו לשפות אחרות, בקוד מורס שלא תוכנן לתנועות, ובכיתות שבהן איש לא דיבר אותה כשפת אם. נשמע מעידו איך מורים הפכו לפונוגרפים חיים, איך כיווניות הטקסט הפכה לשדה קרב, ואיך חומרי למידה כמו ספרי תמונות, תקליטים ושידורי רדיו לא רק שיקפו את העברית — אלא עיצבו אותה. בהמשך, נעבור לדיון תיאורטי רחב יותר: מה זה בכלל אומר להבין שפה דרך טכנולוגיות מדיה? האם שפה מתקיימת אי פעם מחוץ למדיום? נחשוב יחד כיצד מתודולוגיות שונות של מחקרים היסטוריים של מדיה מאפשרים לנו לחשוב גם קדימה - אל העתיד השועט של הקשר בין שפה, תרבות וטכנולוגיה.

    כיצד הבנת הפן האנושי של הדיפלומטיה יכולה לשנות את הדרך שבה אנחנו תופסים יחסים בין מדינות, ומה זה אומר על תהליכי קבלת החלטות ברמות הגבוהות ביותר?בפרק הרביעי של העונה הרביעית אנו מארחים את פרופ' זוהר קמפף מהחוג לתקשורת ועיתונאות ואת פרופ' גדי היימן מהמחלקה ליחסים בינלאומיים, לשיחה על פרויקט המחקר המשותף הפורה שלהם שבוחן את התפקיד המגוון והמפתיע של יחסים בין אישיים בקשרים דיפלומטיים. בפרק אנחנו צוללים אל מאחורי הקלעים של הדיפלומטיה ובוחנים כיצד קשרים אישיים, ידידויות, מחוות פרטיות וכדומה משפיעים על יחסים בין מדינות. בניגוד לדימוי של דיפלומטיה כתחום קר, מחושב ומונע מאינטרסים בלבד, המחקר של זוה רוגדי מגלה שהתנהלות אישית, רגעים של אמון ונרטיבים משותפים יכולים לשנות כיווני מדיניות ולהכתיב תהליכים היסטוריים. נפתח את הפרק בדיון על הפער שהדימוי הזה משקף, וגם על הדמות הייחודית של הדיפלומט או הדיפלומטית המורכבת מאדם פרטי וגם ממדינה על כלל אזרחיה. נבין בדיוק כיצד אוספים מידע על תהליכים שמתרחשים לרוב מאחורי דלתיים סגורות, ואיך קשרים אישיים הם המפתח, בסופו של דבר, גם למחקר על יחסים בין אישיים. בהמשך, נרחיב על נרטיבים משותפים וזיכרון קולקטיבי, ונבחן כיצד הזכרה של העבר והבניית היסטוריה משותפת יכולים לחזק יחסים דיפלומטיים, במיוחד בטקסים רשמיים ובנאומים מדיניים. נעסוק גם בשאלה – מהו הגבול בין יחסים רשמיים לבלתי רשמיים, וכיצד אי-פורמליות יכולה להיות כלי משמעותי בדיפלומטיה? לקראת סוף הפרק, נעבור לדיון על תפקיד המחקר האקדמי בתקופת המלחמה. נדון כיצד האירועים הפוליטיים האחרונים משפיעים על תפיסות המחקר ועל הדרך שבה חוקרים ניגשים לנושא הדיפלומטיה בכלל - וגם נשמע על האופטימיות העמוקה שזוהר וגדי מצאו דווקא במחקר על חשיבות ומרכזיות היחסים הטובים בין נציגי מדינות בתקופה הקשה הנוכחית.
