From Pittsford to Politics: How Senator Brouk is Transforming New York State

What if the change your community needs starts with YOU? For Senator Samra Brouk, it began with a conversation about growing up in Pittsford. That conversation helped set her on a path to the New York State Senate. What could your own experiences inspire you to change? New York State Senator Samra Brouk joins Kevin Spencer Beckford on episode 2 of The Solution Cup for a conversation that brings their shared Pittsford roots full circle. Years ago, Kevin organized a community panel exploring the experiences of people of color growing up in Pittsford. Senator Brouk was among the participants, and hearing how generations of students faced similar challenges helped inspire her journey into public service. Today, she's using her position in the New York State Senate to address systemic inequities and advocate for meaningful change. As a mother of two and chair of the Senate Mental Health Committee, Brouk discusses her work to improve maternal healthcare, expand Medicaid coverage for doulas, address racial disparities in maternal mortality, and protect the rights of mothers during pregnancy and childbirth. But this conversation isn't just about what elected officials can accomplish. It's about the power of everyday citizens to influence public policy. Senator Brouk reveals how constituent emails, phone calls, and community advocacy shape legislative decisions, and why finding solutions should matter more than political affiliation. In this episode: How growing up in Pittsford influenced Brouk's political journey Why representation and lived experiences matter in government The fight for maternal health equity in New York State How ordinary citizens can influence legislation Why meaningful progress requires moving beyond partisan politics Resources & Ways to Get Involved Senator Samra Brouk: https://www.nysenate.gov/senators/samra-g-brouk Find Your NYS Senator: https://www.nysenate.gov/find-my-senator New York State Medicaid: https://www.health.ny.gov/health_care/medicaid/ The Solution Cup with Kevin Spencer Beckford explores how we can turn concerns into action and ideas into impact.
