I so appreciate this take on faith—one that highlights how struggle is embedded into the fabric of life, and how engaging in the messy places of our stories (in real time!) is so important to wholehearted living. The podcast pulls the curtain back and helps us see how performance-based discipleship has long been suffocating to our souls. Ewing counteracts shame by reminding us how we are “remarkably sustained” (and enjoyed, and loved) by God even in the middle of our disfunction, our limitations, and our painful realities. He talks about a more emotionally honest way to engage in life and love… a place where we see God at the center of our stories, enjoying us in our fragile forms. It’s a call to humility and recognition of our dependence on the Lord. It’s such a challenge to identify as a “stickman” when we’ve been practiced into a strongman theology—the podcast nudges us more quickly toward that lightbulb moment where we can recognize the elaborate façades we’ve created to avoid struggle and mask our insecurity. It’s the weight of the world off our shoulders to realize we don’t have to power through and pretend we’re ok—we get to “struggle, strive, and grow.” And maybe it’s in THIS dynamic that relationship with God (and others!) is forged and we find that we are really living—fully alive.

It’s not always easy to find balanced, authentic, and biblically accurate information.
