    Jamie Skove’s 38 Years at Leysin American School: Stories from the Magic Mountain

    What happens when you spend 38 years at Leysin American School? In this episode of The Summit, Jamie Skove looks back on nearly four decades at LAS, from his unexpected arrival in Leysin in 1986 to the students, teachers, trips, adventures, and unforgettable moments that kept him on the Magic Mountain. Jamie shares the story of how a chance phone call brought him from the United States to LAS, having previously attended Aiglon College, and recalls a very different school from the one we know today. He talks about the growth and internationalisation of the LAS community, the transformation of Leysin, the days of smoking rooms, and remarkably relaxed rules, and some of the more dangerous adventures involving students. He also reflects on teaching history and economics across generations, the impact of major world events on his students, cultural trips to places including Prague and Malta, teaching through the COVID-19 pandemic, and the challenges technology and AI present in the modern classroom. Along the way, Jamie reveals his legendary approach to discipline, his secret technique for returning marked papers, the infamous ‘Loser Award’, and why he believes getting students out into the Swiss mountains should remain an important part of the boarding school experience.
