Dodgeball Dilemma: From Ferocious Fun to Safer Sports in Education (repost)

Dodgeball Dilemma: From Ferocious Fun to Safer Sports in Education (repost)

As a PE teacher with a front-row seat to the chaos of dodgeball, I've witnessed firsthand the way it can spiral from fun to ferocious. Flashes of head injuries and the sting of exclusion still resonate with me, as well as the echo of my wife's childhood fears regarding the game. On Super SizedPhysed, we're tackling the enduring controversy of dodgeball in schools, questioning its place in our education system. Join me for a candid discussion on the consequences I've observed, why I ultimately removed dodgeball from my curriculum, and the safer, more inclusive alternatives like castle ball and Wreck-It Ralph that I've come to appreciate.

This episode is more than a walk down memory lane; it's a call to arms for my fellow educators to uphold the integrity of our profession. As we dissect the critical role of teaching sports with professionalism, I invite you to bring your thoughts to the table—whether they align with mine or not. We'll explore how to provide quality instruction that goes beyond the trivial and ensures we are seen as an indispensable part of the educational journey. Together, let's elevate our practice and reaffirm our value in shaping the future of education. Tune in for a thought-provoking conversation that might just inspire you to rethink your stance on the dodgeball debate.

    Take care,

    Dave

P.S. This episode is reposted with AI to hopefully get the word out to others who are on the fence. I am teaching PE again (thank The Lord!), and dodgeball isn't even a question.

No Limits: Tales of Limitless Human Potential

No Limits: Tales of Limitless Human Potential

Ever wondered how breaking the four-minute mile seemed impossible until Roger Bannister made it a reality? Our latest episode is a testament to the limitless potential within us all, as I recount tales of extraordinary individuals who've redefined the boundaries of human capability. I take you through a journey of inspiration, from Roger Bannister's historic run to James Lawrence's mind-boggling 50 Iron Man triathlons in 50 days, each story echoing the power of belief and tenacity. This isn't just about athletic prowess; it's a universal call to action to smash through our own barriers in every slice of life.

The saga continues with Rick Hansen, whose response to paralysis was to wheel across the globe, sparking hope and supporting spinal cord research. Reflecting on Hansen's resilience, I share my personal brushes with obsession, from my infatuation with the Brat Pack films to narrowly escaping expulsion from my teaching program. These narratives weave together a message of relentless pursuit, encouraging listeners like you to redefine your perceived limits in professional realms and personal passions alike. Join us as we light the fire within PE Nation, proving that with unwavering determination, the impossible becomes possible.

Adapting PE Lessons for Inclement Weather

Adapting PE Lessons for Inclement Weather

    What's up PE Nation!
    (Check out this AI summary!)
Ever found yourself with meticulously laid plans for a sunny day, only to have storm clouds roll in and rewrite your entire schedule? That's a regular occurrence for me, where the weather has a mind of its own. Tune in as I recount the trials and triumphs of managing outdoor activities amid these sudden shifts. I'll walk you through a particularly memorable day where blue skies turned grey, forcing rapid indoor pivots, and share the lessons learned on staying flexible and keeping spirits high despite the weather's curveballs. Discover how I, alongside my fellow teachers, tackle the challenge of finding last-minute indoor spaces, and turn a potential letdown into an opportunity for creativity and collaboration.

The second half of our chat zeroes in on my experiences as a PE teacher who's had to adapt to the indoor confines during uncooperative weather. Gone are the days of rolling out the TV cart with a dusty DVD; now, it's all about harnessing the power of technology to keep our kids active and learning. I'll take you behind the scenes of crafting interactive and engaging lesson plans with Google Slides, converting rainfall into a chance to deep dive into critical topics like water and bike safety. It's less about merely filling time and more about maximizing these unplanned moments to enrich our students' understanding—without relying on streaming services that often get the red light from district policies. Join me for a session filled with stories, strategies, and maybe even a few laughs as we navigate the unpredictable skies together.

    What are you passionate about?

Coach Mac N Cheese ,

BEST PE PODCAST OUT THERE

This is my go-to for looking to grow in meeting the needs of my students and leaving them with experiences that will last!!!

Thank you for all you do!

Rob Surfs it ,

Leaders

Andrew, I enjoyed your episode on 3 types of leaders. I wanted you to know I am a PE teacher also and had the micro manager type principal and she also looked for only the negative and not the great things I was doing in my classes. She was toxic not only to me but other teachers.
Though it was not a great experience, I learned so much from it. And really I learned how I didn’t want to treat others as a leader and what the characteristics of a good leader are.
One more thing. I also felt the all too familiar fact that PE was just not a priority to my principal and her vision moving forward. You and I and many other PE teachers fight the good fight everyday for our profession. It is really sad that others are so in the dark about it’s too many to name benefits.
Keep your head up.I have listen to nearly all your podcasts and can tell you are a great teacher and a great individual. We all must take some lumps all along the way and learn from them.
Best,
Robert
