    Episode 2: Beginnings: What Comes Next?

    What happens after the diagnosis? For many people and families, the answer begins with a lot of questions, and a lot of uncertainty. In this episode of The Table, Ian Allan and Rob Hudson are joined by Daniel Soya, a self-advocate and Program Specialist with The Arc of Northern Virginia’s Tech for Independent Living team, and Alyssa Klein, a parent advocate and Development Manager at The Arc of Northern Virginia. Together, they explore the emotions that come with diagnosis, the expectations we place on people and the ways technology, support, accessibility and opportunity can change what’s possible. A diagnosis can offer understanding and connection. But it doesn’t tell us how a life will unfold. That part of the story is still being written.

    Where do the perspectives of parents and self-advocates overlap, and where do they differ? In our first episode of The Table, Rob Hudson and Ian Allan explore the sometimes complicated, but deeply important, conversations between families and people with disabilities themselves. Through honest discussion about identity, advocacy, independence, safety and the future, we examine how different experiences can shape different viewpoints and how listening to one another can help build stronger partnerships. Join us as we begin the conversation about finding common ground while making space for every voice at the table.
