The Take-Up is the place to gather when the film is over. Every episode, film critics Andrew Wyatt and Joshua Ray break down one film to decide if it enters the Take-Up's canon of films that reflect the website's ethos: Creator-owned independent online film criticism, based in the Heartland but traveling the world through cinema. Special guests plead the case for for their personal picks, with new releases getting a chance to sit alongside the greats.

    Irma Vep

    After a night of cat-burgling across Paris, Joshua strips off his latex catsuit and to luxuriate in the world of Irma Vep. He and Andrew peel away the meta-textual layers of French director Olivier Assayas' 1996 tribute to French film history and culture and the cinematic force that is Maggie Cheung. Before that, they have a promised (mini-)discussion about David Lowery's Mother Mary, and after, One More Thing with Christian Petzold and Candy Darling. On the next episode, an Andrew favorite is up for The Take-Up canon: Charles Burnett's Killer of Sheep.     Backrooms

    After a spring break of sorts, Andrew and Joshua are back in the Backrooms, Kane Parsons' (née Pixels) breakout liminal-space horror. Lose yourself in the endless corridors of the YouTube-to-Hollywood pipeline while the critics break down The Discourse around the new filmmaker ("He's 20") and his box office smash and find out whether the two consider it sensational enough to enter the Take-Up's canon. After that, Andrew and Joshua have One More Thing with the Backrooms-y Demonlover and Secret Mall Apartment. To celebrate (or explicate) Joshua's transatlantic move to France, the next episode will celebrate Olivier Assayas' 1996 ode to being a stranger in a strange land (and ode to his future wife and all-time great actor Maggie Cheung) Irma Vep.     Man with a Movie Camera

    Josh and Andrew venture into Soviet Russia to discuss the iconic Dziga Vertov film shown in film history classes, Man with a Movie Camera.     The Last Laugh

    Starting off their dare of including silent films into the Take-Up canon, Josh and Andrew watch F.W Murnau’s class-conscious drama The Last Laugh. Tackling the miserablist story of status, our hosts discuss the film’s political connections with Weimar Germany, its place in film history, the immense talent of Emil Jannings, and a mixed response to the "studio-note" ending. Then, they have One More Thing, bringing up the Tippi Hedren “ferocious comedy” Roar (yes, that Roar) and the 70s adaptations of the fictional Japanese murder mystery detective Kosuke Kindaichi, including The Inugami Family.  Next week, Josh and Andrew continue their journey with Dziga Vertov’s Soviet documentary Man with a Movie Camera.     Messiah of Evil (with Victor Putinier)

    Joining Josh and Andrew this week, Washington University PhD Candidate Victor Putinier takes them down to post-Summer-of-Love California for 70s cult horror classic Messiah of Evil. Giddily getting into Gloria Katz and William Huyck’s “California gothic”, the trio voice their admiration for a film that refuses to draw a clear line in the sand, from its unfinished production, subversion of zombie horror, and somehow doing its own thing while learning from the seemingly disparate works of Italian masters Mario Bava and Michelango Antonioni.  Then, they have One More Thing, recommending the new album The Spiritual Sound from death metal band Agriculture, as well as continuing their talk of California Gothic with the 1970 adaptation of The Dunwich Horror. On the next episode, our hosts decide to give themselves a challenge. Venturing further back in film history, Josh and Andrew will pick out movies from the silent era, starting things off with F.W Murnau’s The Last Laugh.     Frederick Wiseman's Hospital (with Alex McPherson)

    Paging doctors Josh and Andrew, returning guest Alex McPherson calls them down to take a look at documentary icon Frederick Wiseman’s Hospital. A seminal early work in the director’s decades-spanning career, the trio dissect all the gross, aggravating, depressing, and heartwarming moments spread throughout this encapsulating look at 1970s healthcare. Including a talk about similarities to Wiseman’s other doc Welfare, our hosts and guest gladly share their love for the celebrated filmmaker and what he captured through his “reality fiction.”  Next, they have One More Thing, going a little off-kilter this week with the newly-released RPVG Dungeons of Hinterburg and two Letterboxd accounts archiving reviews from two famous critics, Not Pauline Kael and Not Andrew Sarris.     Song to Song (with Stephen Tronicek)

    Josh and Andrew thought they could just roll and tumble… live from song to song… kiss to kiss… until filmmaker Stephen Tronicek twirled them around with Terrence Malick’s musical love-quadrangle drama Song to Song! Picking into a film made in the experimental late-stage of the arthouse icon’s career, the trio quickly get into their love (and some qualms) of one of Malick’s most divisive movies. Featuring a dissection of exactly how many cameos are in this, all the Christian undertones, its depiction of the 2010s Austin music scene, the spinning Emmanuel Lubezki camera, twirling, whispered Rooney Mara monologues, and the magic of Natalie Portman’s abs. Next, Josh and Andrew have One More Thing, recommending Beast, starring a breakthrough performance from Academy Award Winner Jessie Buckley (Producer Ethan: oh, it feels good to write that), and genre-defying 60s British TV show The Prisoner. Next week, our hosts reveal they have one more Oscar movie up their sleeve, Oliver Laxe’s desert rave thriller Sirāt.     Marty Supreme

    For their final episode on some of the 2026 Best Picture Oscar nominees, Joshua and Andrew go head-to-head with Josh Safdie's Marty Supreme. How does it fit in the Safdie ouvré? Is Timothée Chalamet a total turd? Do Safdie female characters deserve better? Does everybody really want to rule the world? They'll answer these burning questions and whether this "historical" ping-pong nerve-jangler belongs in the Take-Up canon. After that, Joshua has One More Thing about Netflix's new Japanese gay reality show, The Boyfriend, and Andrew explores some Backrooms lore with Horror in Impossible Places. On the next episode, filmmaker and critic Stephen Tronicek has some festival fever with Terrence Malick's 2017 drama Song to Song.
