Join Caro and Maddie as they try and tackle the third degree; the phD! The Third Degree is a podcast about the culture of graduate school in science. One recently graduated phD stude nt, and one brand new phD student offer their perspectives on the real struggles and highlights of being a phD student in science.
Episode 2 - A Sabbath For Science?
If God created the Earth in 6 days and then took a day off, why can't I take one day off???
Caroline and I discuss an article we have recently read about bringing back the Sabbath: https://aeon.co/ideas/lets-bring-back-the-sabbath-as-a-radical-act-against-total-work
While neither of us are religious, it brings up an interesting point. We discuss taking breaks as graduate students, as well as the stigma and guilt associated with such. Together we come to a pretty satisfying conclusion.
Episode 1 notes:
Hello, and welcome to Caroline Strang & Madeleine Brodbeck’s new podcast all about the mysterious, tumultuous, ever-threatening “third degree”, the phD!
Caroline recently finished her phD in psychology at the University of Western Ontario, but Madeleine is just starting her first year in psychology at the same institution.
We could talk about our science, and science that we think is cool (and we might now and then), but the focus of our podcast is really to discuss the culture of graduate school in science. There’s something about graduate school and science that seems to constantly try to tear us down… but we can’t quite pinpoint what that is. One of the goals of this podcast is to try and illuminate the real struggles (and highlights, too) of being a phD student. Maybe by talking about it in an open and honest way, we can start to figure out what that negative force is… and maybe, even, combat it with a positive one.
Caroline and I have never done a podcast before (as you can probably tell), but join us anyway for our first episode on what a day in the life of a phD student (or.. recently graduate student) looks like!
