The Unbreakable Advantage

Misty Carson

Most people are taught to overcome their past. We’re here to prove it was never your weakness to begin with. The Unbreakable Advantage is a leadership and performance podcast for those who have walked through adversity and came out sharper, not smaller. This is where lived experience becomes strategy. Where resilience becomes revenue. Where the parts of your story you were told to hide become the very thing that sets you apart. Hosted by Misty Carson, this show is a raw, grounded look at what it actually takes to lead, sell, build, and rise when you’ve been forged under pressure. Through solo episodes and real conversations, we unpack the patterns most people miss, the beliefs that quietly sabotage growth, and the unseen strengths that trauma-forged individuals carry into every room. This is not about motivation. It’s about recognition. What you’ve been through didn’t set you back. It set you apart. Your past may have shaped you, but it doesn’t get to define you. Your strength is yours to claim. What you do with it is yours to decide.

Your Mind Knows but Your Body Doesn't Follow | Ben Oofana on Why Awareness Isn't Enough to Heal

Send us Fan Mail A note before you listen. This conversation touches on childhood trauma, abuse, destructive relationships, and grief. Please take care of yourself as you listen, and if any of it hits close to home, know that you are not alone and support is available.  EPISODE DESCRIPTION  Ben Oofana spent his mid twenties caught in a series of destructive relationships before he understood that he was reenacting the traumas of his childhood and adolescence. That realization set him on a lifelong path of healing. Drawn to indigenous cultures from an early age, he left Texas at seventeen to live among a community of Kiowa and Kiowa Apache people in Oklahoma, where he apprenticed under Horace Daukei, one of the last surviving traditional Kiowa doctors. He has returned to the Wichita Mountains to fast and vision quest, spring and fall, for decades, and has also trained for years in the Taoist internal arts of Xin Yi Quan and Baguazhang, along with time spent living and working in Sri Lanka.   In this deep, unhurried conversation, Ben and Misty explore why intellectual understanding is not enough to change behavior, and why so much of our unresolved pain lives in the body rather than the mind. Ben explains how emotional wounding becomes a backlog of undigested emotion, how conditioning pulls us back into old patterns the moment we are under pressure, and why awareness has to be paired with actually feeling and moving through what we carry.   Together they talk about the comfort we find in discomfort, the courage it takes to leave the old familiar blanket in the corner long enough to build a new one, and how digesting pain rather than escaping it turns it into fuel for growth. They also look honestly at hustle culture, the always on digital era, and what stillness and presence can restore. If you have ever known better and still felt yourself repeating the pattern, this episode is for you.  KEY LISTENER TAKEAWAYS  • Why awareness alone rarely changes behavior, and what has to happen in the body before a pattern can actually shift.  • How undigested emotion accumulates over a lifetime, and why so much of it surfaces only when we are under pressure or in adversity.• The difference between suppressing an emotion and digesting it, and how the second one turns pain into fuel for growth.  • Why the discomfort we keep returning to feels like an old familiar blanket, and what it takes to build a new source of comfort from within.  • How stillness, presence, and regulation quietly interrupt the emotional cycles and generational patterns most people pass on without realizing it.  CHAPTER MARKERS  Timestamps are estimated from the flow of the conversation against an approximate runtime of 100 minutes. On a longer episode these drift more, so fine tune once the final cut is timed.  0:00 Welcome and how Ben found this work  3:00 From Texas to Oklahoma: apprenticing with a traditional Kiowa doctor  9:00 The range of what he treats, from injuries to heartbreak  12:00 A vanishing medicine and the weight of generational trauma  16:00 The vision quest and working through successive layers  20:00 A new season: Sri Lanka, post COVID, and the always on world  24:00 Why most people never learned to work with their emotions  29:00 Reenacting the patterns, and why awareness was not enough  34:00 Diving into the pain: breathing, bodywork, and dissolving attachments  42:00 What people misunderstand about conditioning under pressure  49:00 Comfort in the discomfort and the old familiar blanket  55:00 Karma as lessons and what the patterns reflected back  62:00 What heartbreak reveals that success hides  70:00 How unresolved wounds shape leadership and self worth  76:00 Working with emotions in real time and sympathetic resonance  82:00 Breathing into joy, love, and connection  88:00 Stillness, daily practice, and breaking generational patterns  93:00 Hustle culture, burnout, and rebuilding self trust  98:00 The signature closing three  99:30 Where to connect with Ben  STANDOUT QUOTES  “The vast majority of people have not learned how to work effectively with their own emotions.” Ben Oofana  “You're not getting rid of it. You're digesting it. You're transforming it. It's becoming fuel for growth.” Ben Oofana  “That's when the patterns began to be dismantled, and I experienced real change that I couldn't get just from intellectual understanding.” Ben Oofana  “You strike one tuning fork, and the next one starts vibrating.” Ben Oofana  “The willingness to face life head on, to embrace what life brings to you. That is where my unbreakable advantage comes in.” Ben Oofana  SIT WITH IT  Ben and Misty talked about the old familiar blanket, the discomfort we return to simply because it is what our body knows. So sit with this one. Break or Build | Sims Tillerson on Addiction, Dominion, and the Light on the Other Side

Send us Fan Mail A note before you listen. This conversation includes honest discussion of childhood sexual abuse, addiction, and recovery. Please take care of yourself as you listen, and if any of it hits close to home, know that you are not alone and support is available.  EPISODE DESCRIPTION  Sims Tillerson has spent more than a decade inside the world of employee benefits, from the smallest startups to the Fortune 500. But the reason Misty wanted him in this room has nothing to do with his resume. Sims walked through years of darkness that started when he was thirteen, and he came out the other side carrying a truth he lives every single day: you are not alone, and there is a light.  In this episode, Sims and Misty go straight into the parts most people keep private. Sims opens up about the complex PTSD he carries from childhood abuse, the years he spent numbing a brain he did not yet understand, and the long, unglamorous road to sobriety that ended with his last drink in October 2018. He shares the moment his story shifted from one of heartbreak to what he now calls dominion, and why he refuses to let the worst things that happened to him become the whole of who he is.  Two survivors turned thrivers talk honestly about harm reduction, mental fitness, and why the top performer in your company might be the one quietly struggling. Sims makes the case that sales and mental health belong on the same stage, that value comes from who you are and not only what you produce, and that the pause between a stimulus and your reaction is where you take back control. This is a raw, hopeful conversation about turning pain into power and building something brighter on the other side.  KEY LISTENER TAKEAWAYS  • Why performing at a high level tells you nothing about what someone is carrying underneath, and why your top seller may be the one who needs to be seen most.  • The difference recovery in pieces makes, and why harm reduction is a win worth being proud of rather than an all or nothing demand.  • How the pause between a stimulus and your reaction becomes the place where you break old patterns and choose your response.• What it means to shift a story from heartbreak to dominion, and how perspective built through hardship becomes an enhanced capacity for gratitude.  • Why your worth is not something you earn by producing, and what it takes to believe you have value before you have done anything for anyone.  CHAPTER MARKERS  Timestamps are estimated from the flow of the conversation against a typical runtime for the show. Fine tune once the final cut is timed.  0:00 Welcome and why Sims is in this room  4:10 The many hats and the red thread of storytelling  6:15 The season that ran from thirteen to twenty six  9:20 Naming the root: complex PTSD and coming forward  15:35 The turning points and the shift to dominion  19:45 The hard, unglamorous work of getting sober  24:00 Recovery in pieces and the case for harm reduction  27:00 Resilience, perspective, and gratitude  30:10 When you first believe you can overcome anything  33:15 How his story changed the way he sees the industry  37:25 Preventative mental health, mental fitness, and breath work  41:35 The pause between stimulus and reaction  43:40 Why sales and mental health belong on the same stage  46:50 What Sims needs his thirteen year old self to know  48:20 The signature closing three  51:30 Where to connect with Sims  STANDOUT QUOTES  “I didn't want to have to call my drug dealer every time a bad thought came into my brain. I wanted more control.”  Sims Tillerson  “Just because people perform doesn't mean anything about their mental health.” Sims Tillerson  “The most impactful skill I ever learned for my mental health is breath work.”  Sims Tillerson  “The things that happened to me were not my fault. But how I choose to respond and take care of them, that part is mine.”  Sims Tillerson  “I wish it didn't happen. But now I have this advantage. I am resilient, and I can win as a result.”  Sims Tillerson  SIT WITH IT  Sims said his hardest ongoing work is believing he has value before he has produced anything for anyone. They Love You to the Ceiling | How the People Who Love You Most Can Keep You Playing Small

Send us Fan Mail There is a kind of hard nobody prepares you for. Not the hard of the work or the sacrifice or the starting over. Those are clean. You can see them coming. The hard in this episode is the one that comes from the people who love you. The ones who sat at your table and knew your name before you knew your own worth. And who, without ever meaning to, put a ceiling on what they believe is possible for you, because it is the same ceiling they put on themselves.  In this solo episode, Misty Carson tells the truth about the ceiling built with love. The forty thousand dollar leap everyone called insane. The voices that showed up the same way at every door. The pattern that followed her out of her career and into her relationships. The front porch at forty. The move that finally felt like an answer. And the airport hotel restaurant this past Thanksgiving, where a grown woman became nine years old again, asking the question she had been asking her whole life: when will I ever be enough.  This one lands for anyone who has ever loved people they could not bring all the way with them, and kept going anyway.  IN THIS EPISODE YOU WILL HEAR  The difference between the hard you can prepare for and the hard that comes from the people who love you Why a ceiling built with love is the hardest one of all to name How the same voices show up at every single door, and what they are really asking Why “why can’t you just be happy where you are” was never a question about happiness That you can love people and outgrow them at the same time Why becoming is not all or nothing, and being unfinished in some areas is not failure   CHAPTER MARKERS  Placeholders. Drop in real times once the cut is final.  › 00:00 The hard nobody prepares you for  › The small town ceiling and the air you grow up breathing  › The forty thousand dollar leap everyone called insane  › Pulling your people forward as far as they would come  › The next door, and the same voices saying the same things  › The ceiling that is built with love  › The pattern in love and the front porch at forty  › This past Thanksgiving  › The wrong question  › Becoming is not all or nothing  › Who is loving you to their ceiling    STANDOUT QUOTES  “That’s the ceiling. The Warrior Bloodline | David Bybee on Rebuilding From Rock Bottom

Send us Fan Mail David Bybee is the head coach for Team USA Olympic Kickboxing, a world champion, and the author of the forthcoming book The Warrior Bloodline. He is also, in his own words, two people: the champion the world sees, and the quiet kid who was told daily he should have died.  In this conversation, David and Misty trade stories that line up almost beat for beat. A collision at age five that killed his stepfather and disabled his mother. Years in a home where love went to everyone but him. A season in his twenties when he broke his back, lost his mother, lost his marriage, and lost his gym inside the same window of time. And the moment on a borrowed couch, homeless and in a plastic brace, when he nearly gave up and God had other plans.  What comes out of it is a masterclass in choosing to get back up. Discipline over motivation. Small promises kept. Faith in the stillness. And the decision to hand his son a different voice than the one that echoed in his own head.  A listener note: this episode includes honest discussion of childhood abuse, trauma, and a mental health crisis. Please take care of yourself as you listen, and reach out for support if you need it.  KEY LISTENER TAKEAWAYS  A warrior is forged in private. The real fight is not the one people watch you win, it is the one behind closed doors that nobody sees. You can be dominating in four areas of your life and still handcuffed in one, and that does not erase everything you have built. Discipline outlasts motivation. Motivation is fleeting. The people who make it do the work on the days they do not feel like it. Rebuild in small, incremental goals. Two steps today, one more tomorrow. Keeping small promises to yourself trains your brain to trust you with the bigger ones. Speak it before you believe it. You have to speak it to believe it, and believe it to achieve it. Talk to yourself the way you would talk to someone you love. Legacy is a choice made in the mirror. The cycle stops with one person, and that person is you. CHAPTER MARKERS  Scaled to the final cut runtime of 53:57. The Fragments and the Light with Chasity Vanatter | Chasity Vanatter on Reclaiming a Story She Never Knew Was Hers

Send us Fan Mail Content warning: This episode includes frank discussion of childhood sexual abuse, trafficking, addiction, and complex PTSD. Please take care while listening.  Chasity grew up in a tiny Louisiana town with one red light, no hospital, and a childhood she genuinely loved. Then at twenty seven, her own mind began returning memories she did not know she was carrying. What she found did not just change her past. It rewrote her understanding of who she is.  In this episode, Chasity and Misty sit in the hardest truths and somehow keep finding the light inside them. They talk about what it means to hold two things at once, to love your childhood and to know something terrible happened inside it. They talk about the word "ruined" and why it is the wrong word. They talk about the counselor who changed everything with two words, the grandmother whose blessing became permission to choose herself, and the slow, unglamorous work of healing that looks nothing like anyone expects.  This is a conversation about turning a survivor story into purpose. Chasity now advocates for children facing the very things she lived through, and she is living proof that your story does not have to end where your hardest chapter began.  IN THIS EPISODE YOU WILL HEAR  How Chasity discovered at twenty seven that the childhood she loved held memories she had been carrying without knowing Why warmth became a choice, and what it costs to be the one who walks into rooms as warmth The two words from a guidance counselor that changed the way she survives How to hold two truths at once without letting either one cancel the other Why "ruined" is the wrong word, and what belongs in its place How survivor skills like reading a room, stretching scarce resources, and full presence become real advantages What it looks like to question every belief you were handed and rebuild from the ground up How both women turned silence into advocacy CHAPTER MARKERS  (placeholders, drop in real times once the cut is final)  00:00 Meet Chasity and the work she is building One red light, no hospital, and a childhood she loved The week she left at twelve and never went home The memories that came back at twenty seven Holding two truths at once The word "ruined" and where it landed Her grandmother, the blessing, and choosing herself "Stop looking": the counselor who changed everything Healing is not what she expected Survivor skills as professional superpowers Questioning faith and rebuilding belief I get to decide how it continues The three signature questions STANDOUT QUOTES  "I walk into rooms as warmth."  "Sometimes one random person gives you a compliment and that compliment carries you for weeks."  "My story did not start the way I thought it did, but I get to decide how it continues."  "You get to decide what it is, and you get to decide where to take it."  "We were given these tools that we didn't really need. Now it's time to choose how we get to use them."  THE THREE SIGNATURE QUESTIONS  What does the unbreakable advantage mean to you? Taking what was given to us and molding it into what we want it to be, then using it to shine light into the places too dark for others.   What did you have to let go of to become who you are today? Everything she thought she knew, and the notion that any of it was her fault.  What do you still need to let go of to become who you want to be tomorrow? A bit of anger, the kind that still sits underneath even for someone who carries very little of it.  REFLECTION QUESTION  Sit with this one this week. What did you survive that you have been calling a wound, when it might actually be a tool you get to decide how to use?  ABOUT THE GUEST  Chasity Vanatter is a mother, a survivor, and an advocate for Manatee Children's Services (MCS), a Florida organization that has spent fifty years providing prevention, intervention, and treatment for children facing abuse and trauma. Same Box, Different Bow | Why We Keep Choosing What’s Familiar Instead of What’s Right

Send us Fan Mail New relationship. New job. New city. New chapter. So why does it keep ending the same way? In this episode Misty Carson opens up one of the most humbling things she has ever had to see in herself: the way we wrap the same core pattern in new packaging and expect a different result. A different bow on the same box. She walks through how that one hidden pattern quietly shapes our relationships, our friendships, our parenting, our careers, and even how we spend money on ourselves, and why we almost never catch it while we are in it. We catch it in the wreckage. This is an honest, story driven conversation about how patterns are built before we ever get a say, why familiar can feel like safety even when it is painful, and the one small practice that starts to break the cycle. Not shame. Not a total life overhaul. One pause. One promise. One different choice. What we cover The bow and the box, and why the pattern never shows up wearing the same face twice. How the same pattern hides inside relationships, where familiar gets mistaken for healthy. The friendship version, where we look past the flags just to belong. The hardest one to say out loud: parenting, and responding to your kids the way you were responded to, while loving them fiercely at the same time. The career version, playing small right before the breakthrough and leaving before they figure out you belong. The quiet money version, and Misty's story of stretching a hundred dollars for school clothes and later learning to invest in herself. The worn out shoe: why a trigger can feel like comfort instead of danger. The pause that lives between your old self and your becoming. And the reframe that changes everything: the pattern is not your fault, but once you see it, it becomes yours to own. I left these as topic chapters rather than guessing times. Send me the runtime or the audio and I will turn them into clickable YouTube timestamps. Moments that land "We don't recognize the pattern while we're in it. We recognize it in the wreckage." "Familiar feels like safety even when it isn't." "The discomfort of becoming is temporary. The discomfort of staying is permanent." "Shame keeps the box wrapped." "You are not the box. You are the person with the awareness and the courage to unwrap it." Your reflection this week Where in your life are you getting the same result with a different bow on the box, and what would change if you finally decided to see it? Listen and subscribe New episodes every week on reframing your past and stepping into the person you were forged to be. Why Money is Just The Tool with Taylor Ranker

Send us Fan Mail What happens when a man who once slept in his car and on park benches spends 37 years quietly dismantling the industry that was supposed to serve people and ends up rebuilding it around the human instead? In this episode, Misty sits down with Taylor Ranker, founder of Questmont and author of Dead Cats and Wealth Advisors: Exposing the Myths and Lies of the Wealth Management Industry. Taylor is not, in his own words, a finance bro. He is a self described creative, a first time business partner alongside his wife Sonya, and a man on a mission to turn a transactional, asset gathering industry into one that actually leads, protects, and sees the people behind the wealth. This is a raw, honest, and deeply human conversation about being forged in fire and refusing to let any single season define you. What listeners will take away • Why wealth is only one tool in a much bigger life, and what changes the moment you stop treating it as the whole point • The difference between an advisor who gathers your assets and then golfs, and a personal CFO who protects you, sometimes from yourself • How Taylor turned homelessness, hard decisions, a false accusation, and decades of imposter syndrome into tools that now serve others (his mess became his message) • The “circle of vultures” reality of the industry, and why the structures, not always the people, are the problem • The Gap and the Gain shift that let a 61 year old say everything from here is the gain, plus the 25 year plan that removes the tyranny of time • The eye opening research: about 30 percent of wealthy families want their pets included in their plans, and 0 percent of advisors ask, while 89.7 percent want tax planning and only 24 percent receive it • Taylor’s three family operating models: carry your own water, if it is worth doing it is worth doing well, and the best thing you can pay is attention We close, as always, with the three signature questions. The Math and the Miracle

Send us Fan Mail Guest: Maria Jackson  For seven years, Maria Jackson did everything right and still kept getting knocked down. Three rounds of IVF. Loans taken out, paid off, and taken out again. A patient in her chair telling her she was too late to ever be a mother while she held it together until she reached her car. And one morning, a day after her birthday, she woke up certain she had lost the baby, and her first thought was how many shifts it would take to pay off the loan so she could try again. In this episode, Maria shares the full arc of that journey and the version of herself it built. She walks through the moment everything looked like a massacre and the lunchtime ultrasound that changed everything, the church service where she finally surrendered, and the first Mother's Day that felt heavier than she expected. She also opens up about her career, trading 20 years in dentistry for a full reinvention into AI and business analytics, earning a master's degree full time with a one year old at home, and turning a brutal season of interview rejection into the fuel that got her where she is now. This is a conversation about persistence that has receipts, about keeping the quiet promises you make to yourself, and about reframing every setback into a route forward. Maria's throughline says it all: she does not give up, she just finds another angle. The episode closes, as every episode does, with the three signature questions: 1. What does the unbreakable advantage mean to you? 2. What did you have to let go of to become who you are today? 3. What do you still need to let go of to become who you want to be tomorrow? About the guest: Maria Jackson spent two decades in dentistry, more than 15 of those years as a hygienist, before pivoting fully out of clinical work. Today she serves as a clinical advisor and CTO, supports product development for AI software startups, and helps dental professionals move from clinical roles into nonclinical careers. She is based in South Florida. Find her on LinkedIn and at Mariadentalai.com.   Call to Action You showed up today, and that already says something about who you are.
