Monthly Invitation to Rest Ep 12: Pleasure

The sun rises high over residential buildings crowded with ornate, iron-clad balconies, and from my 5th floor perch, I can see a few brave souls sitting at cafe tables below, sheltered by trees. Come evening, the city will spring to life with hanging lights and lanterns, and those tables will fill with vermouth and bubbling conversations. Here in Madrid, where I’m on a summer sabbatical, there is a daily dance of windows opening and closing; they begin wide open to the midnight air, then fully lock down during the day, before cracking open again at sunset. When the temperature is 100 degrees (39 Celsius) in the baking city, it doesn’t take long to learn the steps to this dance. Entering a time of rest, however, can feel a bit more…foreign. Rest looks different for each of us, so the dance of ‘coming down’ from a busy life is one we learn as we find our own way, and this can feel a bit lonely. Someone once said ‘We read to know we are not alone,’ and one of the great wellsprings of reassurance we have to rest, are in the stories of others who have also dared to take a respite. On the podcast this summer, we’re taking a page from other’s books, literally: looking at rest through the real stories they have lived and written. This month, our storyteller takes us to another city: Rome. Also this month, we’re celebrating a special milestone: this marks our one year anniversary of exploring rest together here on Unclouded Hours. To talk about rest in a society that never sleeps might be seen as a brave thing to do—I and my co-producer Sidney McGregor certainly think so, and we are thankful for you joining us, for listening in, and sharing your thoughts and ‘rest-reports’ from the field. We hope this podcast has been as nourishing to listen to as your notes have been to receive. Let’s keep resting together, shall we? . . . . .
