    Safe-Hubs create opportunities for unemployed youth

    Amid widespread concern about youth unemployment in South Africa, Safe-Hub is creating pathways to opportunity, one community at a time. Safe-Hub was established in Khayelitsha in 2007. It is now active in South Africa, Germany, the United States, India and Côte d'Ivoire. Safe-Hub Founder, Florian Zech says what began as a local response to the need for a safe space to play and learn has since evolved into a global platform for youth and community development.  As South Africa concluded youth month, we put the spotlight on a South African organisation that brings solutions to the plight of unemployment... Our producer Sisanda Jonas spoke to Director of Amandla Social Enterprise, Florian Zech and began by asking him to take us though why he founded the Safe Hubs...

    ActionSA approaches Public Protector over allegations surrounding PR Firm linked to Tony Leon

    ActionSA has filed a complaint to the Public Protector over alleged state capture-esque conduct by Tony Leon's firm, Resolve Communications. The party claims the firm may have improperly linked government officials to clients, including Starlink. This comes after the chairperson of the Communications Committee, Khusela Sangoni Diko, wrote a letter to the Communications and Digital Technologies Minister Solly Malatsi, requesting clarification on allegations contained in recent media reports about engagements between Resolve Communications, owned by Tony Leon, Starlink and Malatsi.     IPID shares details on the arrest of an EMPD official

    The evidence of some of the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry's witnesses on the theft of precious metals has resulted in the arrest of an EMPD official. The suspended official was arrested in Benoni, east of Johannesburg yesterday. The more than 14-million-rands' worth of precious metals were stolen at an apartment in Killarney in July 2023. Witness K recently also implicated suspended EMPD deputy chief Julius Mkhwanazi in the theft. Bongiwe Zwane caught up with IPID spokesperson Lizzy Suping

    Census 2022 reveals top countries to immigrate to South Africa

    The eThekwini Municipality has raised concerns over employers who continue dropping undocumented foreign nationals at the now-closed temporary repatriation site at the old Durban drive-in. More than 7-hundred Malawian nationals are stranded outside the locked facility - with no shelter, food or transport. Many say they were told to leave by landlords and employers fearing fines for hiring undocumented migrants. Meanwhile, Stats South Africa says the top five sending countries to South Africa were Zimbabwe, Mozambique, Lesotho, Malawi, and the United Kingdom.  Bongiwe Zwane caught up with the acting Deputy Director General for Population and Social Statistics at Statistics South Africa, Solly Molayi who says these five countries also maintained their rank since the 2011 census. The chat is followed by an update with the Border Management Authority which says it has had its hands full at the Beitbridge border post in Musina, in Limpopo amid the repatriation and deportation processes that are taking place.     Former President and MK Party leader, Jacob Zuma's recent visit to India has sparked controversy after local media reported that he was seen alongside Ajay Gupta and South Africa's High Commissioner to India. The Guptas have been at the centre of a state capture inquiry in South Africa and are wanted by authorities. They have denied the allegations.     There's still room for improvement for TB treatment regimen: Dr Francesca Conradie

    South Africa's clinical study, BEAT Tuberculosis,  that began in a research unit in Gqeberha in the Eastern Cape, has transformed global treatment of drug-resistant tuberculosis. The primary aim of BEAT Tuberculosis was to evaluate the safety and effectiveness of a novel, shortened treatment regimen for DR-TB compared with the established standard of care. Last week, the study's findings were in the New England Journal of Medicine the highest-ranked medical journal in the world. The publication recognises that this research study has set the global standard for TB care.     Boks prepare for kick-off in the Nations Championship challenge

    INTRO: South Africa's rugby captain captain, Siya Kolisi, says his side will face an England team with in-form players when the two sides kick-off their Nations Championship challenge at Ellis Park in Johannesburg on later this evening. The Springboks are aware this might be an England side in a state of transition, but they'll still be a competitive prospect. The Springboks will face England, Scotland and Wales in quick succession in July in the newly formed tournament. Meanwhile, in a desperate effort to get people into Ellis Park for the Springboks' opening test match of the inaugural Nations Championship against England on *TODAY, the South African Rugby Union has announced a reduction in ticket prices. Prices ranged between 950 and three thousand rand for standard seating as around 30-thousand tickets were still available. However, a large number of tickets are now available at 650 rand, while even prime seating has been reduced to 950 rand. SARU is hoping the reduced prices will bring them closer to having the 62-thousand seater at 90 percent capacity. For more on this Bongiwe Zwane spoke to SABC sports reporter, Thando Mxoli...

    SA's happiness score at 7.1 following Bafana Bafana's qualification to the knock out stage of the 2026 FIFA World Cup 

    According to the National Happiness Index, the country's happiness score stood at 7.1 following Bafana Bafana's qualification to the knock out stage of the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Director for Well-being, AI and Social Impact at the University of Johannesburg, Professor Talita Greyling says this level of national happiness is comparable to the country's highest levels reported during the Springboks' Rugby World victory and other major national public holidays. It is also substantially higher that South Africa's long-run average daily happiness of 5.8, highlighting teh remarkable emotional impact that major sporting achievements can have on an entire nation.
