How to Choose a Holistic Pet Practitioner You Can Trust

When your animal is sick, aging, or struggling, choosing someone to help can feel incredibly vulnerable. And when fear enters the picture, it can become even harder to know who to trust. In this episode, Melissa Sherman and Sunny Gandara move beyond credentials and talk about what pet parents should actually look for when choosing a holistic pet practitioner. They discuss how to research someone before hiring them, questions worth asking, why competence alone isn't enough, and the green flags that can signal a thoughtful, ethical practitioner. They also get into the red flags: guaranteed results, practitioners who discourage veterinary care or diagnostics, pressure tactics, lack of transparency, and anyone who can't acknowledge the limits of their expertise. And for the practitioners listening, Melissa and Sunny turn the conversation around: What are you doing to demonstrate that you're worthy of someone's trust? In this episode: How to research a practitioner Questions to ask before hiring someone 🟢 Green flags to look for 🚩 Red flags to take seriously Why collaboration and referrals matter Transparency around products and affiliate relationships How practitioners can build trust through integrity and communication This conversation builds on our previous episode about certifications and credentials, but you don't need to hear that episode first. What Does Certified Actually Mean in Holistic Pet Care?

Certifications, Credentials, Experience, and What Really Makes a Qualified Practitioner When someone calls themselves a certified animal communicator, nutritionist, herbalist, pet health coach, or holistic practitioner, what does that certification actually tell you? In this episode, Melissa and Sunny unpack the often-confusing world of credentials in holistic pet care. They explore the difference between certification and licensure, why certification programs can vary dramatically in rigor and scope, and why education alone doesn't necessarily tell you whether someone is a skilled, ethical practitioner. They also get into experience, scope of practice, imposter syndrome, the temptation to collect “just one more certification,” and why being willing to say I don't know or that's outside my scope can actually be a sign of a practitioner you can trust. This is the first half of a two-part conversation. Next, we're flipping the question around: How do you actually decide who to trust with your animal? In this episode: Certification vs. licensure How to evaluate training and credentials Education vs. real-world experience Scope of practice and professional integrity The certification/imposter syndrome cycle What credentials can and can't tell you For the full show notes, timestamps, conversation starters, and more from this episode, head to The Whole Pack on Substack. Stop Selling Your Modality: How to Attract More Clients by Talking About Outcomes

Stop Selling Your Modality If you’ve ever introduced yourself with a long list of certifications, modalities, or letters after your name, this episode is for you. As practitioners, we’ve invested years studying nutrition, herbal medicine, Reiki, EFT, animal communication, TCVM, and countless other approaches. Those credentials matter. But when a worried pet parent lands on your website, they’re not searching for a modality. They’re searching for hope. In this episode, Melissa and Sunny explore one of the most common mistakes holistic practitioners make: leading with how we work instead of what becomes possible. Together, they discuss why credentials don’t build trust the way we think they do, how industry jargon can unintentionally push people away, and how shifting your language can help more animals receive the support they need. Whether you’re an animal communicator, nutritionist, veterinarian, bodyworker, herbalist, energy practitioner, trainer, or holistic pet health coach, this conversation will help you communicate your work in a way that truly connects. In this episode * Why clients don’t buy modalities... they buy hope * The difference between describing your credentials and describing transformation * How to stop speaking in practitioner jargon * Why your client should always be the hero of the story * Using your clients’ own words to communicate your work * The “coffee shop test” for explaining what you do * Simple ways to make your website, bio, and social media more approachable * Why simplifying your language doesn’t diminish your expertise Key Takeaway People aren’t searching for an EFT practitioner, a Reiki Master, or someone certified in TCVM. They’re searching for someone who understands what they’re going through and can help their animal feel better. Lead with the transformation. The modalities can come later. Beyond the Diagnosis

What if your animal’s symptoms are only one piece of a much larger pattern? Dr. Chris Bessent joins Melissa and Sunny to share about the world of Traditional Chinese Veterinary Medicine and explain how nearly four decades of holistic veterinary practice have changed the way she sees every animal who enters the room. They explore the difference between treating a diagnosis and understanding the pattern beneath it, what an animal’s tongue, pulse, behavior, and elemental constitution can reveal, and how acupuncture, Chinese herbs, food therapy, and Western medicine can work together. Dr. Bessent also shares why two animals with the same diagnosis may need completely different support, where pet health coaches must stay within their scope, and the refreshingly simple lesson animals have taught her about healing: they do not care which approach gets the credit. They just want to feel better. Learn more about Dr. Bessent through Herbsmith, The Simple Food Project, Medicus Veterinary Diets, and the complimentary Curate the Bowl recommendation resource.
