    The Morning After

    Peter went back to fishing. Like none of it had happened. In this episode, Joe Stein walks through John 21:1–19 — the morning Jesus shows up on the beach at dawn, builds a charcoal fire, and cooks breakfast for the man who denied him three times. We slow down on the detail almost everyone misses: John uses the Greek word anthrakia (charcoal fire) only twice in his entire gospel — here on the beach, and in the courtyard where Peter denied Jesus. The same fire. On purpose. We also weave in Paul's "good fight" line from his final letter, because the church reads Peter and Paul together for a reason — two failures who got an assignment instead of a sentence.     Strangers, Still

    Deuteronomy 10:17–21 • Hebrews 11:8–16 • Matthew 5:43–48 — The Feast of Independence Day Independence Day was this past weekend — cookouts, fireworks, flags on the porch. But the readings the church appointed for the Fourth of July don't celebrate the country. They tell us to love the stranger. Joe digs into the Hebrew word ger — the resident alien, the one who lives among you but doesn't quite have full standing — and traces it from Deuteronomy's command to love the ger ("for you were strangers in the land of Egypt"), through Hebrews' picture of Abraham still living in tents even after reaching the promised land, to Jesus' hardest line in the Sermon on the Mount: love your enemies, because loving people who already love you back is just accounting. This isn't a knock on America — it's the church's word to every country in every generation. The freedom these three readings are pointing to isn't the freedom to defend your own patch of land.     "Here I am." Abraham says it three times in Genesis 22 — to God, to Isaac, to the angel on the mountain. Each time, the answer costs him more. This week I sit with the hardest story in the Hebrew Bible: a father, a son, a three-day walk, and a knife. I don't try to soften it. I want to understand what Abraham is hearing when he keeps answering — and what changes the moment the ram catches in the thicket.     Before John the Baptist stood in the Jordan calling Israel to repentance, he disappeared. Luke tells us "the child grew and became strong in spirit, and he lived in the wilderness until he appeared publicly." Between his miraculous birth and his prophetic ministry are decades the gospel writers compress into a single sentence — the hidden years. This episode sits in that silence. We trace Zechariah's restored voice, Elizabeth's quiet courage, and the long obscurity that shaped the forerunner of Christ.     Fire In The Bones

    There's a thing you said once that you wish you could take back. Not because it was wrong — because it cost you something. A conversation with a family member that hasn't been the same since. A position you took at work that put you on the outside of a circle you used to be in. A moment of honesty that ended a friendship. You weren't trying to start anything. You just said what you actually believed. This week, Joe sits with Jeremiah — the prophet who tried to keep his mouth shut and couldn't, who called the truth in him "a burning fire shut up in my bones." Paired with Matthew 10, where Jesus tells his disciples not to be afraid because they're worth more than many sparrows, and warns in the same breath that the gospel doesn't always bring peace to the dinner table. With Psalm 69 and Romans 6 woven through, this is an episode about the cost of saying the thing — and the deeper cost of holding it in. The fire in your bones is not a curse.     When He Saw The Crowd

    (Matthew 9:35–10:8) There's a moment in any crowded place where you realize nobody is really looking at you. Not in the polite way. Not in the dismissive way. In the way where somebody actually sees you — sees what kind of day you're having, sees the thing you've been carrying for six months. This week's gospel opens with somebody seeing the crowd. Before Jesus sends the twelve disciples out on their first mission, Matthew slows down and tells us what Jesus felt when He looked at the people in front of Him. The Greek word is splagchnizomai — and it doesn't mean "He was moved." It means His insides churned. His guts twisted. It's a physical word for a physical reaction to suffering He couldn't unsee. Then He names twelve people — ordinary, uneven, complicated people — and sends them out. One of them is Matthew, the tax collector, who wrote this gospel and made sure to put his own job title next to his name. He didn't clean it up. He left it in. This episode sits with what it means to be sent as a sheep who happens to have a shepherd — sent to find the ones who don't. And it asks the harder question: what does it look like to show up for someone this week when you don't know what to say? Pull up a chair.     When You've Stopped Hoping

    There's a laugh you let out when somebody mentions a thing you used to pray for — a thing you stopped hoping for years ago. Half breath, half ache. Sarah laughs that laugh in Genesis 18, behind the tent flap, at ninety years old, when three strangers tell her she's going to have a son. This week on Monday to Sunday, Joe Stein sits with that laugh — and with the question God asks through the tent flap that doesn't shame Sarah, just names what's happening: Is anything too wonderful for the Lord? Then we turn to Romans 5, where Paul writes the chain you can't shortcut: suffering produces endurance, endurance produces character, character produces hope — and hope does not disappoint. Sarah at thirty would have hoped easily. Sarah at ninety, hoping again after fifty years of disappointment, is the kind of hope Paul is talking about. The kind that's been through the fire and is still standing. If you have a thing you've quietly stopped praying for — a relationship, a healing, a calling, a chapter that didn't come — this week is for you.     The Person Who Vouched

    Somebody believed in you before they had a good reason to. A teacher. A boss. A friend. Someone who walked you into a room you wouldn't have gotten into on your own — and you would not be who you are without them. You probably haven't thought about them in a while. Today the church remembers a man whose entire job in the Bible was to be that person. Without Barnabas, there is no Paul. The greatest missionary in church history existed because one man was willing to spend his own credibility on someone the church was still afraid of — twice. This episode walks through Acts 11 and the Acts 9 backstory that makes it land, with Matthew 10 and Isaiah 42 doing the spine work. By the end, you'll have two specific things to do — one for your past, one for somebody's future. The first you can do in the next ten minutes. The second will take longer, and matter more.
