  1. Breaking the Binary: A Trans Woman's Experience Navigating the World

    01/13/2023

Breaking the Binary: A Trans Woman's Experience Navigating the World

Every year, yearbook advisers and their students find it harder to cover topics in their schools that are more inclusive to their student population and current social issues. Some out of fear of backlash, others because they don’t know where to start. One of the most recent topics of controversy in schools has been the discussion of trans students, the use of pronouns, and how to better understand and effectively cover them in their yearbooks. In this episode, I had the privilege of learning from a former yearbook editor Avi Manullang, and her personal experience as a Trans woman. My goal when addressing this topic is to educate the masses, better understand trans issues, and teach students how to objectively tell a story in the yearbook.  WALSWORTH YEARBOOKS - SPONSOR For more than 85 years, Walsworth Yearbooks has exceeded expectations and provides unmatched expertise. 2. Why do we do Yearbooks?

    02/19/2021

    Why do we do Yearbooks?

A printed yearbook chronicles the most important moments in a school year, the perspective of everyone involved in the school, and is a keepsake whose value grows more each year. To the people that buy the yearbook, it allows them to physically have something to touch when revisiting the book at the end of the year and in the future. But to the adviser, the editor, and staff, it is more than that. It’s an outlet for creativity, a place for personal growth, college opportunities, lifelong relationships, and more. In today’s episode, we bring on special guests Stephanie Perluss and Nakomi Hunter from West Covina High School, Avni Sinaga from Rancho Cucamonga High School, David Diablo from El Camino Real Charter High School, and Dana Cuellar from Americas High School, with her yearbook rep Lori Garcia. I also interview a very special person to me, and lifelong Yerd- Brooke Renna Pang. Brooke fell in love with the yearbook in elementary, continued in middle school, and later became Editor at Beaumont High School. She left behind an award-winning publication and legacy. She now is a Walsworth Yearbook Representative in Northern California. We discuss the most asked questions from advisers and current staff members to inspire current and prospective yearbook students and Advisers. This year is different and, for some, the most challenging in their lives. The yearbook captures every moment, and it only gets done because of the selfless and unsung heroes that put it all together. 1:51  Brooke Renna Pang Yearbook Story(NorCal Yearbook Representative) 4:30 Lori Garcia Yearbook Story (El Paso Yearbook Representative) 6:41 Dana Cuellar Yearbook Story (Americas HS Editor) 9:05 David Dablo Yearbook Story (El Camino Real Charter HS Editor) 12:05 Avni Sinaga Yearbook Story (Rancho Cucamonga HS Previous Editor) 14:45 Carlos Giron Yearbook Story (SoCal Yearbook Representative) 17:12 Stephanie Perluss Yearbook Story (West Covina HS Adviser) 24:10 Nakomi Hunter (West Covina HS Previous Staff Member) 27:34 Describe your hardest or most challenging day in yearbook and how you overcame the situation. 42:21 What story or spread are you most proud of that you created?  54:39 What can an adviser say or do to encourage students to be engaged and do their work? 1:05:23 What is your absolute favorite memory from yearbook that you will never forget? Shifting to a Remote Mindset

Thinking remote means being able to distill our interactions and reflect on what we value. What aspects of being in a classroom do we care about the most? How can we extract these parts and repurpose them to work in a remote setting? In today’s episode, we bring on special guest David Sawhill from Claremont High School, Kelly Tilson from Redlands East Valley High School, June Straight from Parkland High School, and Yearbook Rep Lori Garcia. We have an open discussion about their initial nerves, fears, and the uncertainty they felt about accomplishing what they thought was impossible. We discuss how a change in their mindset takes them from being nervous to motivating their students and push through to produce this once-in-a-lifetime historical book. 2:43 Mindset - When did you realize you needed to change your mindset 22:11 Surveys - What do you put in surveys to get results 26:13 Old Habits - How you need to approach this like a new adviser instead of a veteran adviser 26:49 Adviser Support - How connecting with other advisers can help you grow 30:41 Moral - How to keep positive morale with staff 34:53 Content Collection - What change did you make in order to help gather content 37:48 Unmotivated Students - What do you do to deal with apathy 43:17 Senior Ads - How are you collecting and marketing them 49:22 I Quit - What keeps you going from not quitting yearbook 53:42 Creative marketing - What new marketing tactics did you do to help push sales 59:15 Importance of Yearbook - Why is important to you and your kids Walsworth Yearbooks - SponsorFor more than 80 years, Walsworth Yearbooks has exceeded expectations and provides unmatched expertise.
