If you've ever yelled at someone on social media about, say, cancel culture or mask-wearing, then you are a soldier in the culture wars - those everyday battles for dominance between conflicting values. The acclaimed writer and podcaster Jon Ronson has seen friends swallowed up in them to the extent that it's ruined their lives. Jon was curious to learn how things fell apart, and so he went back into the history of the culture wars to find some of the origin stories: the pebbles thrown in the pond, creating the ripples that led us to where we are today. He had no idea what he'd find, but he's uncovered some extraordinary people and the strangest, yet most consequential tales.

I’ve been enjoying the show since the first episode, but I feel that season 2, episode 5 is the true example of the careful balance Jon has of topics. We get to hear the mom express very legitimate concerns. And we hear how certain politicians used her story, fabricating details, to their own fearmongering ends. We hear the reason some of the policies she’s struggling with came to be. The very real, legitimate reasons, and how, perhaps, some individuals are warping them. People on both sides have actual issues, and other people, ON BOTH SIDES, are misrepresenting those issues. Love the show, because it makes me think about both sides.

I always loved Ronson’s work and bought several of his books, but his recent reporting fails all journalistic standards and is wildly anti-trans. It’s inexplicable and kind of heart-breaking

I was a bit lost and confused after the 2024 election. I couldn’t understand how some of my friends and family saw things so differently than I did. I couldn’t stomach my usual True Crime podcast and came upon this and finished both seasons within a two week span. The perspective this gave me- it calmed me. It allowed me to settle a bit and think through what is happening with a different lens. I sure hope there is another season soon- incredible podcast and work. Will be getting Jon’s book to tide me over!
