The frightened body is fast — cortisol floods you, and it doesn't care what time it is, it just says move. This week we ask what actually constitutes a warrior's timing, and find an uncomfortable answer: the too-quick inflamed response and the frozen, collapsed one are the same failure. Both are a body that has lost its ability to perceive the opening in time. So we go looking for people who survived the unsurvivable, and land on capoeira — an Afro-Brazilian martial art built under enslavement and prohibition, disguised as a dance. We sit with the ginga (readiness as perpetual motion, the opposite of bracing), malícia (deception as the intelligence of those who can't afford to be seen), and the berimbau, whose player watches the game and calls the opening for you. Because the community calls the moment. You don't find it alone. We corroborate with kairos, the Greek word for right timing rooted in archery and weaving, and with Musashi, who wrote in 1645 that bodies collapse when their rhythm becomes deranged — which posed the question: what if empire is nothing but the transfer of bad timing into our bodies. Astrologically: Leo Season opens with the Nemean Lion, whose pelt no weapon could pierce, and Hercules, who wore it until it killed him. Mercury stations direct in Cancer, Saturn stations retrograde, and the lunar nodes shift into the Aquarius-Leo axis, turning the whole collective toward each other. Plus a Libra First Quarter Moon that wants a decision. Content warning: discussion of trauma and the freeze/collapse response, gendered and racialized violence, slavery, and death.
