Thomas Hardy

Thomas Hardy was an English novelist and poet born in the rural hamlet of Higher Bockhampton in the county of Dorset on June 2, 1840. Hardy is often categorized as a Victorian realist, influenced by Romanticism, especially noted for the extensive description of the nature in his works and the tragic characters. While he considered himself primarily a poet, Hardy is now mostly known for his novels, which reflect a deep sense of moral skepticism and a preoccupation with the struggle of individuals against the indifferent forces of the universe. His writing often explores themes of social constraint, fate, and the destructive nature of love and desire. Hardy's characters are frequently compelled by the inexorable forces of society and their own internal compulsions, thwarting personal happiness and thrusting them towards tragic destinies. Some of Hardy's most acclaimed novels include "Tess of the d'Urbervilles," "Far from the Madding Crowd," "The Mayor of Casterbridge," and "Jude the Obscure." These works are renowned for their critical look at Victorian society, particularly with respect to the class system and the treatment of women. "Tess of the d'Urbervilles" and "Jude the Obscure," perceived as especially scandalous at the time of their publication, contributed to Hardy's decision to abandon novel writing and turn ultimately to poetry. In poetry, Hardy produced several collections that were well received, exhibiting his characteristic gloom and fatalism, but now crafted in verse. His poetry collection "Poems of Past and Present" and the epic drama "The Dynasts" are notable contributions to English literature. Hardy passed away on January 11, 1928, having lived long enough to witness the transition to modernism and the impacts of World War I, which influenced his later poetry.
