    Being authentic in pursuing music - Lanzo Luconi (#9)

    The following conversation is with Lanzo Luconi. Lanzo is a pianist, music educator, and the founder of the Costa Rica Piano Festival, which is the first of its kind in Central America, created to provide international musicians with the best learning opportunities through lessons with world renowned artists, competition, solo and orchestra performances, and valuable seminars, while enhancing Costa Rica’s growing music culture. During the conversation we touch on subjects such as the role of mentorship, being authentic in pursuing music, following values, being committed, motivations, knowing your strengths, the similarities between sports and the arts, overcoming performance anxiety, showing discipline in creative work, talent vs effort, the flow state, daily routines and habits, battling writer’s block, collaborating with others, the relationship between dreams and creativity, following a lifestyle that benefits the creative life, music preferences, and giving advice to younger musicians.     The following conversation is with Chris Hornbrook. Chris is mostly known for being the drummer in Poison The Well. Though, he also plays drums for a variety of music artists such as Greg Puciato, Dhani Harrison, The Black Queen, Big Black Delta, Trash Talk or Senses Fail. During the conversation we touch on subjects such as the role of mentorship, finding meaning in making music, setting values in life, what are the biggest motivations, working with your strengths, what music teaches us that we can apply in other areas of life, how to deal with performance anxiety, showing discipline in creative work, talent vs effort, the flow state, daily routines and habits, how to overcome a creative rut, the power of creative collaboration, the role of autonomy in music making and what it means to express your personality through your music, the importance of goal setting, the relationship between dreams and creativity, making beneficial lifestyle choices, and the nostalgic power of music.     Pete Jacobson is a cellist and performing artist from LA. In 2013 he won a Grammy for best Latin Rock Alternative or Urban Album as a member of the group Quetzal. Pete has recorded cello for Dr. Dre and also for The Walking Dead.     Failures lead to success (#4)

    I had the pleasure to chat with violinist, composer, and producer Eric Gorfain from Los Angeles. Eric has long focused on bridging the worlds of classical and rock music. His early professional days were spent as a violinist in the recording studios of Tokyo, followed by a stint as concertmaster for Jimmy Page & Robert Plant's Unledded tour, inspiring him to create The Section Quartet, which quickly became an in-demand studio ensemble for rock, pop & rap artists. Along the way he learned the craft of string arranging, contributing his sensibility to albums by a wide range of artists such as Foo Fighters, Christina Aguilera, James Blunt, Kanye West, Sam Phillips, Band of Horses, Def Leppard, Tesla, Sean Lennon, A Perfect Circle, Cassandra Wilson, Snow Patrol, Neil Diamond, Fiona Apple, Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds, Kelly Clarkson, Banks, Robbie Williams, and REM, just to name a few. Eric has published several rock string quartet arrangements of songs by Radiohead, Coldplay and Elvis Presley, with plans to publish more titles on the horizon. During this episode we talked about the importance of creating routines, having active recovery phases, building resilience, embracing failure in order to succeed, and also about green tea.
