A show that brings light to the doom and gloom of the everyday dystopia that we are living in, but never shies away the hard reality. Two brothers striving to thrive, build community and stay connected.

Ep45: The Big One: Unpacking Bob’s Dissertation

Ep45: The Big One: Unpacking Bob’s Dissertation

The show starts with the song Peeper by Dave and Julie Peachtree.  The Crew discusses seed sharing as spring has sprung.  They also discuss how-to: both germinating seeds and growing starts.

The topic of the day’s show is unpacking Bob’s dissertation research (as well as his teaching).  Bob grounds his work in liberation psychology which is the movement to root psychology in the struggle for oppressed people for freedom.  His main research explores the oppressive power dynamics of white supremacy and masculinities as well as how white men, in particular, can interrupt those dynamics.

Bob summarizes the major results of his dissertation, which include life stories of white men who aspire to do anti-racist, feminist work.  And then what that work looks like for them in their lives and in their communities.

Bob makes a commitment to publish his research!  Hyperlink coming.

    Gut Check
The chances of Dereck Chauvin being found guilty.  (Dave says yes, and 10 years behind bars.  Bob gives it a 4; Dave then gives it a 3).

Ep44: Emotional Baggage in Our Bodies

Ep44: Emotional Baggage in Our Bodies

The brothers first talk wasabi burns and then get into discussing the 1st weekend of the NCAA tourney.   Dave’s finishing up his spring break, and Bob is almost starting theirs. Dave’s high is an hour and a half run that he went on, which triggers a conversation on running.

The topic of today’s show is unpacking our physical pain, especially with a lens to emotional roots of pain.  Dave discusses how his awful back pain a few years ago eased and began to heal after seeing a homeopath.  He brings in ideas about how to release stress that builds up in our bodies.  Bob has come to understand that fascia in our body plays an important role in connecting physical pain and emotional stress.

Errata: Texas State are the Bobcats; not the Wildcats as Bob said.

    Gut Check
Air travel will become as normalized this summer as before the pandemic.  Dave gives it a 9/10. Bob says 7/10.

    Ep:43 Season Six! Unpacking Baggage

    Ep:43 Season Six! Unpacking Baggage

Bob and Dave discuss some of their strengths as podcasters. They recorded this episode on St. Patrick’s Day, and they discuss the origins of the Whiskey-Milk drink.

The Crew introduces the new season’s theme: baggage.  They start with the premise that all human’s have baggage.  They want to “unpack the baggage,” in multiple ways this season.

For episode 1, the brothers keep it concrete and dystopia and discuss packing a go-bag.  This is rooted in the plot of Octavia Butler’s Parable of the Sower in which the heroes become refugees and have to leave their home with a packed bag.  Bob created a go-bag last summer during the California fire season, so the Crew discusses what’s in that bag.

    Gut Check
A double-digit seed team (10 or below) will win the men’s NCAA tournament this year. (Dave gives it a 3.  Bob gives it a 2).

Ep42: Increasing the Courage to Confront and Other Reflections on Season 5

Ep42: Increasing the Courage to Confront and Other Reflections on Season 5

Dave starts the episode telling Bob a scary and wild story of how he almost lost his wedding ring (hint: think hamburg).  The Crew then discusses COVID-related issues including some ethical questions related to vaccination.

The topic of the show is a look back on season 5.  The Crew harvest some take-home messages from the season on avoidance with the focus on how we can strengthen our confronting muscles.

The brothers end with a baseball question.  And to you listeners, let us know if you want to join our fantasy league.  Spots available!

Ep41: In-grouping/Out-grouping and the Strange Case of Rattlesnake

Ep41: In-grouping/Out-grouping and the Strange Case of Rattlesnake

The show starts with a brief discussion of the “bob emergency.” As they have been doing recently, the brothers make no-very-outdated Golden Globe picks.   They do end it with a good Levy-Levy-Levy connection.  On a dime, they shift to discussing Dave getting vaccinated, and whether society has learned anything from the pandemic.

The topic of the show is in-grouping/out-grouping, and this dynamic leading to types of avoidance.  This is a framework very grounded in social psychology, so Bob lays out the ways this process can work even very subtle and even with the best of intentions.  The Crew draws on the creation and existence of Rattlesnake.  Using ideas from social and community psychology, they discuss the strengths of Rattlesnake, the shortcoming, and how to think about community-builidng going forward.

Ep40: There’s No Thriving Without Music, Part 2

Ep40: There’s No Thriving Without Music, Part 2

The Crew shifts it up this week and starts out with some content off the bat.  They take on the issue of procrastination (a type of avoidance).  Procrastination has a heavy negative connotation, but they brother discuss whether that’s always warranted.  They agree at least that the high-level of anxiety can be dissipated when understanding one’s own work process.

The main portion of the show is a change of pace.  The brothers wanted to share some music with each other for the week.

Shouldn’t Have to Be Like That - Fra Lippo Lippi
The Mother We Share - Chvches
Level It Up - The Coup
