In a world with an oversaturation of podcasts, three late-comers (or early if you think about it) decided to dip their toe in the crowded public cesspool of spoken-word audio entertainment. Their focus? A tool and family-focused sitcom that aired pre-Y2K (or pre-9/11 for you millennials).
The show, Home Improvement, is headed by former cocaine dealer and (former) stand-up comedian/actor Tim Allen (of The Shaggy Dog fame) who is a television show host showcasing various tools and DIY projects to a live studio audience (so meta). A mid-day show whose targeted at-home audience is ostensibly at work on their respective job sites.
Tim is a klutz of epic proportions and his lovely wife and their three Aryan sons must, unfortunately, deal with the consequences. This pretty much sums up 8 or so years of television, but it’s rich in quality, story, and character. Enough so that these gents decided to wax intellectual about it over the course of 50+ minutes, almost double the length of an actual Home Improvement episode!
They cut deep into the story and characters while highlighting some of the humor that would not be acceptable today due to respective offenses and hyper-sensitivity.
Whether you’re at work, on the tread mill, taking public transportation, or tunneling out of a federal penitentiary—Tool Boys is a great way to pass the time while learning to appreciate television from a simpler time.
