Hidden Costs of a Non-Diverse Smile: How Lack of Representation Hurts Your Teeth w/ Dr. Liala Hishaw

Hidden Costs of a Non-Diverse Smile: How Lack of Representation Hurts Your Teeth w/ Dr. Liala Hishaw

Imagine being one of only four dental students from a minority background in your entire class. This was the reality for a dentist who highlights the critical need for diversity and inclusion in the dental field. Her story, along with the work of organizations like Diversity in Dentistry, sheds light on the challenges and opportunities to create a more representative dental workforce.

One of the biggest hurdles for minority students considering dentistry is the lack of representation. They might not see themselves reflected in their dentists or dental schools, leading to a sense of exclusion and a feeling that dentistry isn't for them. This is where Diversity in Dentistry steps in.

This organization tackles the issue head-on by providing crucial support for minority students. Financial barriers are a major obstacle for many aspiring dentists. Diversity in Dentistry helps by assisting with the often-steep costs of dental school applications, making the path to a dental career more accessible.

But financial aid isn't the only piece of the puzzle. Mentorship plays a vital role. Having mentors from similar backgrounds allows for honest conversations about the challenges minority students might face. These mentors can provide invaluable guidance and support, fostering a sense of belonging and encouraging students to persevere.

The dentist also emphasizes the importance of showcasing the benefits of women in dentistry. In her area of service, having a female dentist can be a significant advantage for patients who may feel more comfortable with a woman providing their dental care. Highlighting these successes can inspire other women to pursue dentistry and contribute to a more balanced workforce.

Building a non-profit organization like Diversity in Dentistry comes with its own set of challenges. Perhaps the most difficult is securing sustainable funding. Fundraising and grant applications are a constant struggle, but essential to keep the organization running and supporting future generations of diverse dentists.

Beyond the points raised by the dentist, there are other important aspects of diversity in dentistry to consider.

Cultural competency: A diverse dental workforce is not just about representation, but also about cultural competency. Dentists who understand and can effectively communicate with patients from various backgrounds can provide better care and build stronger patient-dentist relationships.
Improved health outcomes: Studies have shown that a lack of diversity in healthcare can lead to poorer health outcomes for minority patients. Having a more diverse dental workforce can help bridge this gap and ensure everyone receives the dental care they need.
Innovation and excellence: Diverse teams bring a wider range of perspectives and experiences to the table. This can lead to greater innovation in dental care and improved overall quality of service for all patients.
In conclusion, creating a diverse and inclusive dental field is essential for ensuring equitable access to quality oral healthcare. Organizations like Diversity in Dentistry are making significant strides in this direction by supporting minority students, promoting cultural competency, and showcasing the value of a diverse workforce. By addressing the challenges and continuing to champion these efforts, we can build a brighter future for dentistry, one that reflects the rich tapestry of our communities.

Minimal Actionable Content

The guys themselves are hilarious and fun to listen to, but in reality there just isn’t much content that dives beyond some anecdotes and superficial coverage of topics. I listened to about 10 before realizing I learned very little even as a newish grad.
