Advent 3: The Joy of Joseph

Join us for Mother Jen Keifer's sermon, The Joy of Joseph. This Advent we want to look at what it was like for Zechariah, for Joseph, for the Magi and others as they experienced the message of God coming to them from angels and from dreams and from the stars in the heavens. Week Three, Joy. In a unique and insightful way, Jen shares with us the understanding and the wisdom of Joseph, who refused to harden his heart and instead remained open, gentle, and faithful. We walk through the story of Joseph as he is spoken to by God through his dreams, and each of those dreams leads them according to God's plan. From our scripture in Matthew: Her husband Joseph, being a righteous man and unwilling to expose her to public disgrace, planned to dismiss her quietly.  But just when he had resolved to do this, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream and said, “Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary as your wife, for the child conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit. She will bear a son, and you are to name him Jesus, for he will save his people from their sins.”  All this took place to fulfill what had been spoken by the Lord through the prophet:  “Look, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son,      and they shall name him Emmanuel,” which means, “God is with us.”  When Joseph awoke from sleep, he did as the angel of the Lord commanded him; he took her as his wife, but had no marital relations with her until she had borne a son; and he named him Jesus… …Now after [the Wise Men] had left, an angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream and said, “Get up, take the child and his mother, and flee to Egypt, and remain there until I tell you; for Herod is about to search for the child, to destroy him.”  Then Joseph got up, took the child and his mother by night, and went to Egypt, and remained there until the death of Herod. This was to fulfill what had been spoken by the Lord through the prophet, “Out of Egypt I have called my son”… …When Herod died, an angel of the Lord suddenly appeared in a dream to Joseph in Egypt and said, “Get up, take the child and his mother, and go to the land of Israel, for those who were seeking the child’s life are dead.” Then Joseph got up, took the child and his mother, and went to the land of Israel. But when he heard that Archelaus was ruling over Judea in place of his father Herod, he was afraid to go there. And after being warned in a dream, he went away to the district of Galilee. There he made his home in a town called Nazareth, so that what had been spoken through the prophets might be fulfilled, “He will be called a Nazorean.” Saturday Sunset Services at 4 pm Join us in person in Beverly, MA this season. Advent 1: The Hope of Zechariah

Join us for Cn Tim Clayton's sermon, The Hope of Zechariah This Advent we want to look at what it was like for Zechariah, for Joseph, for the Magi and others as they experienced the message of God coming to them from angels and from dreams and from the stars in the heavens. Week One, Hope. Maybe you can identify with disappointments, maybe you have misplaced hopes, maybe you feel like your story is dried up. This week we look at the story of Zechariah and Elizabeth and the message of hope that Gabriel brings to them. From our scripture in Luke 1: Then there appeared to him an angel of the Lord, standing at the right side of the altar of incense. When Zechariah saw him, he was terrified; and fear overwhelmed him.  But the angel said to him, “Do not be afraid, Zechariah, for your prayer has been heard. Your wife Elizabeth will bear you a son, and you will name him John. You will have joy and gladness, and many will rejoice at his birth, for he will be great in the sight of the Lord. He must never drink wine or strong drink; even before his birth he will be filled with the Holy Spirit. He will turn many of the people of Israel to the Lord their God. With the spirit and power of Elijah he will go before him, to turn the hearts of parents to their children, and the disobedient to the wisdom of the righteous, to make ready a people prepared for the Lord.”  Zechariah said to the angel, “How will I know that this is so? For I am an old man, and my wife is getting on in years.”  The angel replied, “I am Gabriel. I stand in the presence of God, and I have been sent to speak to you and to bring you this good news. But now, because you did not believe my words, which will be fulfilled in their time, you will become mute, unable to speak, until the day these things occur.” Saturday Sunset Services at 4 pm Join us in person in Beverly, MA this season. King of All Creation

Join us for Ben Lowe's sermon, King of All Creation Christ the King Sunday! Join us as Ben Lowe (director of ARocha USA) leads us through the beautiful and awe inspiring of Jesus, the King of all Creation. When life hits us with powerful and relentless storms, there is always one who stands with us to command the winds and the rushing water in the storms of this life, and in the calm and beauty. From our scripture reading in Luke: One day he got into a boat with his disciples, and he said to them, “Let us go across to the other side of the lake.” So they put out, and while they were sailing he fell asleep. A windstorm swept down on the lake, and the boat was filling with water, and they were in danger. They went to him and woke him up, shouting, “Master, Master, we are perishing!” And he woke up and rebuked the wind and the raging waves; they ceased, and there was a calm. He said to them, “Where is your faith?” They were afraid and amazed, and said to one another, “Who then is this, that he commands even the winds and the water, and they obey him?” Saturday Sunset Services at 4 pm Join us in person in Beverly, MA this season. Kingdom Season: How Christ Became King of All

Join us for Cn Tim Clayton's sermon: How Christ Became King of All Kingdom Season is a period of reflection on the reign of Christ, observed between All Saints' Day (November 1st) and the start of Advent. It is also known as Kingdomtide and culminates in the Feast of Christ the King, which is the last Sunday of the church year. The season uses this time to focus on the themes of God's kingdom. This week we look at How Christ Became King of All. How God Became King of All. In today's sermon we look at Paul's letter to the church in Philippi, which is at least 240 hours in travel via sailing and marching from Rome. In order to control that whole region in Northeastern Greece, the Roman military veterans were given land and placed there in that region after Rome conquered it so that they could import Rome's culture and could influence this region to help hold it under the control of the Empire, and it worked.  From our reading in Philippians 2, "Let the same mind be in you that was in Christ Jesus, who, though he was in the form of God, did not regard equality with God as something to be exploited, but emptied himself, taking the form of a slave, being born in human likeness. And being found in human form, he humbled himself and became obedient to the point of death—even death on a cross."  What Paul is showing the Philippians is completely counter to everything the Empire had ever taught them. Jesus, though He was God, did not regard equality with God something to be exploited, but rather emptied Himself, taking the form of a slave being found in human likeness; became obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross. The cross is the Empire's most famous form of torture and humiliation. Jesus dies the most humiliating torturous death the Empire had invented.  Paul goes on to share that because of Jesus' death that,  "Therefore God also highly exalted him and gave him the name that is above every name, so that at the name of Jesus every knee should bend, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father."  Jesus demonstrates His Kingship in that He reaches out to you, and to each one of us. Kingdom Season: King of Forgiveness

Join us for Cn Tim Clayton's sermon: King of Forgiveness Kingdom Season is a period of reflection on the reign of Christ, observed between All Saints' Day (November 1st) and the start of Advent. It is also known as Kingdomtide and culminates in the Feast of Christ the King, which is the last Sunday of the church year. The season uses this time to focus on the themes of God's kingdom. This week we look at Forgiveness. From our scripture reading in Luke 5: One day, while he was teaching, Pharisees and teachers of the law were sitting near by (they had come from every village of Galilee and Judea and from Jerusalem); and the power of the Lord was with him to heal. Just then some men came, carrying a paralyzed man on a bed. They were trying to bring him in and lay him before Jesus; but finding no way to bring him in because of the crowd, they went up on the roof and let him down with his bed through the tiles into the middle of the crowd in front of Jesus. When he saw their faith, he said, “Friend, your sins are forgiven you.”  Then the scribes and the Pharisees began to question, “Who is this who is speaking blasphemies? Who can forgive sins but God alone?” When Jesus perceived their questionings, he answered them, “Why do you raise such questions in your hearts? Which is easier, to say, ‘Your sins are forgiven you,’ or to say, ‘Stand up and walk’? But so that you may know that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins”—he said to the one who was paralyzed—“I say to you, stand up and take your bed and go to your home.”  Saturday Sunset Services at 4 pm Join us in person in Beverly, MA this season. The Nicene Creed and A Response to Ongoing Situations in the ACNA.

Join us for Cn Tim Clayton's sermon, The Nicene Creed and A Response to Ongoing Situations in the ACNA. Join us for Tim's caring and personal response and a beautiful insight to the Nicene Creed. In light of the ongoing serious issues within the leadership of the Anglican Church in North America, at some point the ACNA needs to acknowledge that we have a culture problem in significant leadership roles within the ACNA. Why can't we do the biblical thing and lament? Can we imagine what might change if we had National Days of Lament over this? We also have to acknowledge that sorting out situations like this is very difficult. What can we do when we've been harmed by the church or more specifically by the Senior Leadership within the church? When the church has deeply and personally disappointed you? How do we find a way forward when the situation seems devastating and deeply disappointing?  One way is through lamenting together, one way is through calling on leadership to be accountable, another way is through a practice that's gone on for centuries within the church worldwide, The Nicene Creed. This year marks the 1700th anniversary of the Nicene Creed. The Creed happens because the early church leaders wanted to center people in the core of God's narrative love story in Christ Jesus..
