Isaiah Series 1: Heart and Courage, Here I Am, Send Me

Join us for Cn Tim Clayton's sermon as we start our Isaiah Series 1:  Heart and Courage, Here I Am, Send Me This summer we look at the courage and encouraging words that God shares with us from the Prophet Isaiah when things look really rough. This week we begin with a look at the heart and courage of Isaiah as he understands the love and commitment of God towards all of us. Today's reading from the book of the prophet Isaiah (6.1-8): In the year that King Uzziah died, I saw the Lord sitting on a throne, high and lofty; and the hem of his robe filled the temple. Seraphs were in attendance above him; each had six wings: with two they covered their faces, and with two they covered their feet, and with two they flew. And one called to another and said: ‘Holy, holy, holy is the Lord of hosts;  the whole earth is full of his glory.’ The pivots on the thresholds shook at the voices of those who called, and the house filled with smoke. And I said: ‘Woe is me! I am lost, for I am a man of unclean lips, and I live among a people of unclean lips; yet my eyes have seen the King, the Lord of hosts!’ Then one of the seraphs flew to me, holding a live coal that had been taken from the altar with a pair of tongs. The seraph touched my mouth with it and said: ‘Now that this has touched your lips, your guilt has departed and your sin is blotted out.’ Then I heard the voice of the Lord saying, ‘Whom shall I send, and who will go for us?’ And I said, ‘Here am I; send me!' The Holy Trinity, Welcomed at the Table of God.

Join us for Cn Tim Clayton's sermon: The Holy Trinity, Welcomed at the Table of God. Ascension, Pentecost, and Trinity Sunday are inextricably linked as a single continuous narrative of God revealing Himself to humanity. They form a chronological and theological progression: Christ returns to Heaven, the Holy Spirit empowers the Church, and together they reveal the triune nature of God. This week Tim invites us deeper into connecting with God as we look at the story of the Trinity and the reminder that we are all invited and welcomed at the table of God. From our Scripture reading in John 16: But now I am going to him who sent me; yet none of you asks me, ‘Where are you going?’ But because I have said these things to you, sorrow has filled your hearts. Nevertheless I tell you the truth: it is to your advantage that I go away, for if I do not go away, the Advocate will not come to you; but if I go, I will send him to you. And when he comes, he will prove the world wrong about sin and righteousness and judgment: about sin, because they do not believe in me; about righteousness, because I am going to the Father and you will see me no longer; about judgment, because the ruler of this world has been condemned. “I still have many things to say to you, but you cannot bear them now. When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all the truth; for he will not speak on his own, but will speak whatever he hears, and he will declare to you the things that are to come. He will glorify me, because he will take what is mine and declare it to you. All that the Father has is mine. For this reason I said that he will take what is mine and declare it to you. Pentecost, The Story of God’s Love in Our Lives

Join us for Mother Jen Keifer's sermon: Pentecost, The Story of God’s Love in Our Lives Ascension, Pentecost, and Trinity Sunday are inextricably linked as a single continuous narrative of God revealing Himself to humanity. They form a chronological and theological progression: Christ returns to Heaven, the Holy Spirit empowers the Church, and together they reveal the triune nature of God. In this fascinating study, Jen looks at the story of God from the beginning in Genesis, through to birth of the church, Pentecost! A reminder of who God is, and how God cares deeply for each one of us, even in the way we speak to ourselves internally, in the way we care for one another, and the way we care for the creation around us. From our Scripture readings in Luke, Acts, and Galatians: When it was evening on that day, the first day of the week, and the doors of the house where the disciples had met were locked for fear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood among them and said, ‘Peace be with you.’ After he said this, he showed them his hands and his side. Then the disciples rejoiced when they saw the Lord. Jesus said to them again, ‘Peace be with you. As the Father has sent me, so I send you.’ When he had said this, he breathed on them and said to them, ‘Receive the Holy Spirit.’ [Later, after Jesus had ascended back to the Father:] When the day of Pentecost had come, they were all together in one place. And suddenly from heaven there came a sound like the rush of a violent wind, and it filled the entire house where they were sitting. Divided tongues, as of fire, appeared among them, and a tongue rested on each of them. All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other languages, as the Spirit gave them ability. ... Now the works of the flesh are obvious: fornication, impurity, licentiousness, idolatry, sorcery, enmities, strife, jealousy, anger, quarrels, dissensions, factions, envy, drunkenness, carousing, and things like these. I am warning you, as I warned you before: those who do such things will not inherit the kingdom of God. By contrast, the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, generosity, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. There is no law against these things.  Saturday Sunset Services at 4 pm Join us in person in downtown Beverly, MA this season on Dane Street. The Ascension of Christ

Join us for Mother Wendy Dixon's sermon: The Ascension of Christ Ascension, Pentecost, and Trinity Sunday are inextricably linked as a single continuous narrative of God revealing Himself to humanity. They form a chronological and theological progression: Christ returns to Heaven, the Holy Spirit empowers the Church, and together they reveal the triune nature of God. It's quite interesting that The Ascension happens in the same place (Bethany) where Lazarus came out of the tomb.  With the ascension of Christ, death is put to rest. By Jesus ascending, death does not have the last word.  What are the implications of the ascension in our lives as we live them today? Join us as Wendy takes a deeper look at this amazing story. from our reading in the Acts of the Apostles Chapter 1: While staying with them, he ordered them not to leave Jerusalem, but to wait there for the promise of the Father. “This,” he said, “is what you have heard from me; for John baptized with water, but you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit not many days from now.”So when they had come together, they asked him, “Lord, is this the time when you will restore the kingdom to Israel?” He replied, “It is not for you to know the times or periods that the Father has set by his own authority. But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.” When he had said this, as they were watching, he was lifted up, and a cloud took him out of their sight. While he was going and they were gazing up toward heaven, suddenly two men in white robes stood by them. They said, “Men of Galilee, why do you stand looking up toward heaven? This Jesus, who has been taken up from you into heaven, will come in the same way as you saw him go into heaven.” Saturday Sunset Services at 4 pm Join us in person in downtown Beverly, MA this season on Dane Street. Jubilee, The Rhythms of God

Join us for Cn Tim Clayton's sermon: Jubilee, The Rhythms of God During Easter Tide this season, we are trying to understand what the Kingdom of Heaven is, and what it means to live in communion with God, with each other, and with the Creation around us. What it means for the Kingdom of Heaven to be here on Earth. The best image we have of this in the scripture is the Jubilee, the Sabbath of Sabbaths. Imagine a once in a lifetime reset. All your debts released, and all that you've lost restored. What would it be like to live with God in a Heaven and Earth come together as one way? It would be both a tangible and a spiritual reality. Join us as Tim looks deeper at Jubilee. Imagine that challenge that is troubling you being resolved.  Imagine that debt that is overwhelming you being relieved. Imagine that weight of worry being removed.  The wonder and joy and peace that would be released.  Imagine the reality of God, a steadying and close touch with this hope.  Jubilee is meant to train the people for eternity.  We need regular practices and rhythms to get into those spaces. A rhythm of God giving life as gift and as grace.  Only one thing is needed, sitting and listening to Jesus.  Taking the time to sit with Jesus regularly. To sit with one another regularly. To find those rhythms in our life to bring us peace and balance and hope.  To live in the radical present. To bring that sabbath rest and trust into our daily lives.  From our reading in Philippians 4:  Rejoice in the Lord always; again I will say, Rejoice. Let your gentleness be known to everyone. The Lord is near. Do not worry about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. Jubilee, The Loving Gaze of God

Join us for Mother Wendy Dixon's sermon: Jubilee, The Loving Gaze of God During Easter Tide this season, we are trying to understand what the Kingdom of Heaven is, and what it means to live in communion with God, with each other, and with the Creation around us. In this insightful sermon, Wendy reminds us what it means to be "seen" by our friends, our families and especially by God. This loving reminder that God sees each one of us and knows us and loves just as we are. That we are always in the "loving gaze of God."  This is how we can start to bring Jubilee into the world, into our homes, into our neighborhoods. How we can continue to see one another with that same "loving gaze of God." From our reading from the Gospel of Mark chapter 5: Then one of the leaders of the synagogue named Jairus came and, when he saw him, fell at his feet and begged him repeatedly, “My little daughter is at the point of death. Come and lay your hands on her, so that she may be made well, and live.”  ...Now there was a woman who had been suffering from hemorrhages for twelve years. She had endured much under many physicians, and had spent all that she had; and she was no better, but rather grew worse. She had heard about Jesus, and came up behind him in the crowd and touched his cloak, for she said, “If I but touch his clothes, I will be made well.” Immediately her hemorrhage stopped; and she felt in her body that she was healed of her disease.  Immediately aware that power had gone forth from him, Jesus turned about in the crowd and said, “Who touched my clothes?” And his disciples said to him, “You see the crowd pressing in on you; how can you say, ‘Who touched me?’” He looked all around to see who had done it. But the woman, knowing what had happened to her, came in fear and trembling, fell down before him, and told him the whole truth. He said to her, “Daughter, your faith has made you well; go in peace, and be healed of your disease.” While he was still speaking, some people came from the leader’s house to say, “Your daughter is dead. Why trouble the teacher any further?” But overhearing what they said, Jesus said to the leader of the synagogue, “Do not fear, only believe.” He allowed no one to follow him except Peter, James, and John, the brother of James. When they came to the house of the leader of the synagogue, he saw a commotion, people weeping and wailing loudly. When he had entered, he said to them, “Why do you make a commotion and weep? The child is not dead but sleeping.” And they laughed at him.  Then he put them all outside, and took the child’s father and mother and those who were with him, and went in where the child was. He took her by the hand and said to her, “Talitha cum,” which means, “Little girl, get up!” And immediately the girl got up and began to walk about (she was twelve years of age). At this they were overcome with amazement... Saturday Sunset Services at 4 pm Join us in person in downtown Beverly, MA this season on Dane Street. The Resurrection - Jubilee Fulfilled

Join us for Mother Jen Keifer's sermon: The Resurrection - Jubilee Fulfilled "...there will be no one in need among you." During Easter Tide this season, we are trying to understand what the Kingdom of Heaven is, and what it means to live in communion with God, with each other, and with the Creation around us. In this timely sermon, Jen shares with us the insights into Jubilee and the story of the landowner in Matthew 20, while at the same time leading the "in person" parish through an activity to help come alongside one of our neighboring communities here on Boston's North Shore.  From our reading in Deuteronomy 15: If there is among you anyone in need, a member of your community in any of your towns within the land that the Lord your God is giving you, do not be hard-hearted or tight-fisted toward your needy neighbor. You should rather open your hand, willingly lending enough to meet the need, whatever it may be. Be careful that you do not entertain a mean thought, thinking, “The seventh year, the year of remission, is near,” and therefore view your needy neighbor with hostility and give nothing; your neighbor might cry to the Lord against you, and you would incur guilt. Give liberally and be ungrudging when you do so, for on this account the Lord your God will bless you in all your work and in all that you undertake. Since there will never cease to be some in need on the earth, I therefore command you, “Open your hand to the poor and needy neighbor in your land." Jubilee, All of Our Hopes Realized

From our reading in 1 Corinthians 15: or this perishable body must put on imperishability, and this mortal body must put on immortality. When this perishable body puts on imperishability, and this mortal body puts on immortality, then the saying that is written will be fulfilled: ‘Death has been swallowed up in victory.’ ‘Where, O death, is your victory?     Where, O death, is your sting?’ The sting of death is sin, and the power of sin is the law. But thanks be to God, who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ. Therefore, my beloved, be steadfast, immovable, always excelling in the work of the Lord, because you know that in the Lord your labour is not in vain.
