5 Reasons Why People Stop Reading Your Novel

In this episode, I discuss 5 reasons why I stop reading novels. I wanted to discuss this topic because I like to survey my family and friends for red flags they find in books and why they might stop reading. By identifying these common pitfalls, we can eliminate these issues from our work and become stronger writers. 1) Point of view isn't deep enough, which leads us to not connect with characters 2) Too much exposition. This equals a boring plot.  3) Graphic imagery or story does not match the description. Personal preference, but I find excessive swearing to be a turnoff. 4) Small theme. Intellectual satisfaction is a big part of reading for many people.  5) Story has been done a million times before. Try adding a personal touch to your work to prevent this.  I created the Turn Write Podcast for beginning writers, for indie authors, for people who are looking for their voice and who want to know how to use it. The idea for this bite-sized podcast came to me as I sat in endless traffic commuting an hour each way to and from my 9-5 job, wondering why do I write? Why do I rush home every day with the agonizing hope of trying to string together meaningless words to create a feeling deeper than I could dare hope to describe? Well, day after day I kept thinking and there was only one answer: I loved to write. I am on a journey to becoming a published author, and I want to help you get there too. 5 Reasons Why You Shouldn't Give Up On Your Writing Journey

In this episode, I discuss 5 reasons why you shouldn't give up on your writing journey. 1.  Your work isn't as bad as it seems. Being close to your work gives you a blurry perspective that is not reality. 2. Small steps or steps backward are better than none at all. Don't discount the opportunity to self-publish or publish articles on websites. Steps backward will teach you not to make the same mistakes and reroute you to where you want to go.  3. Writing is worth it if you truly love it. You don't give up on running just because you aren't going to the Olympics.  4. There are a lot of mental benefits from writing. You are not living a complacent life, but instead devoting yourself to learning. Creativity, learning new words, and being highly skilled in the writing process are all transferrable skills to any industry.  5. You are going to make it, if you stick it out long enough.  I created the Turn Write Podcast for beginning writers, for indie authors, for people who are looking for their voice and who want to know how to use it. The 5 Tools of Being a Writer

In this episode, I discuss the 5 tools of being a writer.  1. Imagination -the vision for your work, not just limited to writing, but shows up in many ways in your life -the desire to live a creative and artistic life 2. Storytelling -the ability to take the temperature of the room and understand how your work is coming across -how to engage with an audience and be relevant 3. Grit -the tenacity to write consistently and deal with rejection and the negative statistics of being a writer -most people think a 5 paragraph essay is challenging but you're writing a 50,000 word novel! 4. Command of Language -love of language and metaphor -understanding the rhythm of sentence structure -the ability to be your own editor  5. Emotion -deep feelings within you create deep feelings within the reader -sensitivity is a great asset for a writer  I created the Turn Write Podcast for beginning writers, for indie authors, for people who are looking for their voice and who want to know how to use it.
