Street Focus 102: Streets of the World - Detroit with Andrew Shields

This week on this episode of Street Focus, we are going to Detroit, Michigan and Andrew Shields is your local guide for this new adventure!

    Who is Andrew Shields?

A Metro Detroiter since I could crawl, I've always had an interest in the city. Trips to Tiger Stadium with my parents as a child, then live music with my now wife in the city's small venues as a teen; Detroit remains a destination. Photography classes in my youth taught me the fundamentals and darkroom processing. As film transitioned to digital I took a break from shooting but when I learned that mirrorless systems allowed for adapting classic manual lenses to modern bodies my passion for photography was reignited. Today I shoot as often as possible, preferring candid street scenes with considered compositions over other photographic disciplines. When I'm not shooting you can find me hunting down the vintage lenses that I find at local thrift stores and estate sales which I use for all of my street photography.

Street Focus 101: Through Our Eyes Project with Jason Williamson

About the Project: The Through Our Eyes Project hands out cameras to people who are living on the street, in a local shelter or are otherwise affected by homelessness. Unlike any project before, the homeless in communities will have an integral hand in helping expose the issue of homelessness rather than merely being the problem that others are trying to solve. Through Our Eyes Project is bigger than a social experiment. It's greater than an art piece. It's more important than an outreach. This project is a lifeline. The photographers will be equipped with a tool to tell their story. They will be encouraged through a word of hope. The community will be engaged to support those who work with the homeless and proceeds will help fund homeless ministries. The cameras are disposable, but the people behind them are not.

About Jason: Jason Williamson is a pastor in Spartanburg, South Carolina. After studying photography at Winthrop University, Jason worked in digital advertising sales for 10 years prior to transitioning to a career in ministry. Going on an international mission trip to a megacity in Asia changed his perspective on how he should be living his life as a Christian. Photography has been one of his passions for nearly 18 years and has become a critical tool for his ministry work as it tells stories, captures events and rethinks the role of the arts in missions and ministry.

Jason travels around the world as part of his ministry and enjoys street photography, abstracts and making ugly or disinteresting things look beautiful for people to see in a new way. He loves his wife and two children, listening to music, watching documentaries, and enabling others to use their gifts and talents to do great things.

Extreme useful and refreshing.

I have started listening to TWiP from the very first (available) episode. There are so many helpful tips and photography insight that I see photography differently. I have a better understanding of equipment and techniques. It's an amazing asset for an amateur photographer.

Excellent Photography Podcast

It can't be easy to make audio podcasts on something as visual as photography, but Valérie does an excellent job. Whether you're looking for inspiration on what to shoot, locations to visit, gear to buy, or even copyright issues to consider, Valérie has it covered. I especially enjoy the interviews with international photographers that are often included. The associated webpage adds another level to the rich educational experience.
