I was hoping this would be a better dive. It feels like somebody’s reading a Wikipedia entry rather than doing their own research. Which would have definitely resulted in a more nuance (if not fair) approach.
I’ve never been in a cult, but I’ve been in a couple of organizations that have been viewed by some as cults.
They’re usually misrepresented, so I tend to do my research. I have walked away from an organization (actually two) that began to resonate as cultish to me.
I imagine that these podcasts not have different criteria, but it’s frustrating to me that they went after the gee work, it’s only to people who read about it, I’ve never met anybody who has been in it, or even left it that felt this way. There’s a lot of great stuff in this tradition and I’ve never been asked to do anything even remotely cultish.
I think it’s really sad that they get so politically Intertwined. When they’re talking about and joking about the Trans-Siberian railroad experience, and then make trans comments that lead to hatred for Candace Owens, it only leaves me wondering what the point is.
If you want to talk, just talk, but why promote this as a serious conversation about cults, and stop wasting time in a personal or political virtue signaling diatribe.
It doesn’t help any cause when the people who are promoting, it are both inaccurate and glib.
Clearly, you’re both both intelligent people, but I’ve come to expect more than this.
It’s disappointing and frustrating.
