If you’re first-gen or supporting a first-gen student, that simple rule can save time, stress, and money. In this Transfer Basics episode, Professor G explains how California community college districts work. Some, like the Los Rios Community College District, include four colleges—Sacramento City, American River, Cosumnes River, and Folsom Lake—using one student ID and the same registration system. Others, like L.A. Community College District, have nine colleges under one umbrella. And some are one-college districts, like Hartnell in the Salinas Valley. What it means for you - if your classes are within the same district, you can typically mix campuses using the same ID and portal. -If you want to take classes in a different district, plan ahead: you’ll submit a new application, receive a new ID, and follow that district’s processes. - For sanity and success, limit yourself to 1–2 colleges at a time. That keeps counseling, registration, and financial aid straightforward.
