Art: Jacques-Louis David, the Classical Avant-Garde

🎨 Jacques-Louis David is renowned for his grandiose paintings of Napoleon, as well as for being a leader of the neoclassical movement. Interestingly, his first choice was to bring back classical themes, such as Greek mythology. However, because of his involvement in the French Revolution, he started painting contemporary situations, such as “The Coronation of Napoleon”, which ironically made him one of the most avant-garde painters of his generation. This year, the Louvre Museum is celebrating the bicentennial of his death with a major exhibition. Cinema: Louis Malle, From Silence to Scandal

🎥 Louis Malle, a French film director renowned for his inquisitive spirit and stylistic audacity, his versatility and diversity of themes, and the contentious debates his choices sparked. He received the prestigious Palme d’Or at the tender age of 23 for his work with the acclaimed Commandant Cousteau, and an Academy Award at 24. Malle’s work never neatly conformed to any particular movement, but it often aligned with the Nouvelle Vague.
