Hidden Resources: Deep Dive 01 with Next Chance on Reusable Gift Wrapping

INTRODUCTION Let’s wrap the year with a special holiday gift: the very first deep dive of Hidden Resources, the new interview series within Unboxing Your Packaging. And, fittingly, it’s all about reusable gift wrapping! I loved the energy and passion Maude and Gabrielle shared in our interview. Every choice they make reflects their values, and hearing their story really inspires. With the holidays approaching, it’s the perfect moment to celebrate and reconnect through the meaningful work they do at Next Chance. Discover how circular packaging solutions really work: from material choices and design to resource flows and real-world challenges.  Structured insights, honest conversations, and practical frameworks you can apply: all based on the Develop Circular Packaging Solutions training.  No sponsors, no fluff, just circularity in action! RESOURCES MENTIONED IN THIS EPISODE The Develop Circular Packaging Solutions online training: https://www.look4loops.com/develop-circular-packaging-solutions-trainingEpisode 14 https://www.look4loops.com/packaging-podcast/ep14-sustainable-gift-wrappingWHERE TO FIND MAUDE AND GABRIELLE AND NEXT CHANCE? The website of Next Chance: https://www.nextchance.ca/ABOUT GABRIELLE HUPPÉ AND MAUDE GIRARD FROM NEXT CHANCE  Maude Girard and Gabrielle Huppé met while working in finance. As a couple in life, they always dreamed of building something meaningful together. In 2020, Next Chance was born from a realization that struck them: 540,000 tons of wrapping paper end up in the trash every year in Canada. That insight sparked their desire to create reusable fabric gift wraps. It is on the way that they discovered an even bigger problem: textile waste. More than 12% of the world's fabric production is thrown away without ever being used. They knew they could do more than observe, they could act. Next Chance became their way to transform deadstock fabrics into beautiful, lasting pieces for gift wraps and decorations. PODCAST MUSIC Special thanks to Joachim Regout who made the jingle. Will your products actually compost? Find out with open-source data from the Compostable Field Testing Program

INTRODUCTION Ready to rethink compostable packaging?  In this episode, Emily McGill from BSI Bio dives into the Compostable Field Testing Program (CFTP), an initiative that open-sources field trial data to drive progress in the industry. Curious about what they've uncovered? In addition to several key takeaways, you'll learn  the key differences between field and lab testing, how methodologies are evolving, and which materials have been put to the test.Plus, there's a big update! Since recording, the program is forging ahead — actively seeking collaboration on strategy and fundraising for its next research phase. The focus? Building a game-changing matrix comparing disintegration rates with composting conditions. This is crucial intel for both composters and the packaging industry. I loved how Emily takes a step back to explain things, making even the process of "playing" with open-source data and graphs fascinating—whether you're a composter, product designer, manufacturer, policymaker, or brand. And don't miss the final minute, where Emily shares her vision for the future—it's worth sticking around for! From single-use to reuse: How eco-design is shaping the future of food packaging

INTRODUCTION No, reusables are not just single-use items with a QR code slapped on to encourage reuse! True reusability starts with intentional design right from the beginning. That’s exactly why it’s so valuable to learn from Annie Legroulx, Director of Innovation at Cambium, based in Montréal. With her expertise in designing and distributing eco-friendly takeout solutions, she has firsthand experience navigating the challenges of transitioning from single-use to reuse systems. In this episode, we’ll explore: Why eco-design must balance standardization with adaptability for different food applications. How a local supplier can play a key role in overcoming challenges such as condensation, traceability, and procurement hurdles. And what a well-thought-out end-of-life approach should involve, whether your packaging is recyclable or compostable.I admire Annie’s dedication to collaborating with diverse stakeholders to address real-world needs. Her pragmatic and grounded view of reuse—as part of a necessary transition that still leaves room for certain single-use applications—feels refreshingly practical and actionable. No more waste and toxicity: Unlocking value in sustainable materials and manufacturing.

INTRODUCTION If you’ve ever asked yourself any of the following three questions, then this episode is for you! How can you eliminate toxicity and waste from your facilities and products? How can you uncover value and opportunities in the threats and challenges you face, from material extraction and processing to disposal? What do you still need to learn to truly embrace a shift toward a more circular economy? We’re diving into these questions with my guest, Paul Foulkes-Arellano, co-author of the book Materials & Sustainability: Building A Circular Future. If books open windows to the world, then let’s leaf through one that reveals a new view of sustainable materials and manufacturing. Together, we unpacked the meaning of sustainability ;we compared terms like virgin materials vs. waste materials, procurement vs. management, carbon emissions vs. water crisis, and many others that shed light on crucial issues ;and we brought fresh perspectives, even starting with some thought-provoking quotes. As you’ll see, we approached this content with the playful curiosity of children jumping into a pile of colorful leaves, leaving you to grab the one idea that resonates most. Reduce, Reuse, Refill: Paris's Journey to a Zero Single-Use Plastic Future – Bold Moves for the Olympics?

INTRODUCTION What actions can a city like Paris take to eliminate single-use plastic? How do urban economic actors become key players in reduce, reuse, and refill initiatives? And could the 2024 Olympics and Paralympics serve as an extra motivation? Join us as Justine Laurent, Managing Director of Circulab, explains the operational and relational support necessary for such transformative changes. Get ready to be inspired by global strategies and numerous examples, such as free-water fountains, collaborations with reuse initiatives, and incentives and certifications for economic players to help reshape our cities and villages by significantly reducing plastic use!
