Spirituality vs. Religion, Family Expectations, Identity, Authenticity & Music | A Conversation with Stazzy – How Did You Get Here?

What happens when the life you were taught to live no longer aligns with the person you’re becoming? In this episode of Another Perspective, I sit down with artist "Stazzy" also known as AJ for an honest conversation about spirituality, religion, family expectations, identity, authenticity, and how those experiences have shaped both the person and artist he is today. Growing up in a strict African Christian household, AJ learned early what was expected of him. He eventually pursued ministry and was on the path toward becoming a pastor, but began questioning whether the version of purpose he was pursuing actually aligned with what he felt called to do. Rather than seeing his decision to walk away as failure, he began redefining what faith, purpose, and service meant for himself. We talk about the difference between religion and spirituality, the pressure of disappointing the people who love you, learning to become comfortable with choices others may not understand, and what it takes to express yourself without shrinking to fit someone else’s expectations. Stazzy also shares how that journey shows up in his music, why self-actualization has become such a recurring theme in his work, and how he sometimes has to remind himself, “You are exactly who you think you are,” before stepping into spaces that challenge his confidence. We also explore the gray areas of life, letting go of the idea that there is always one “right” path, giving ourselves permission to evolve, and taking the time to discover what genuinely matters to us. In this conversation, we explore: • Spirituality vs. Religion• Family and Generational Expectations• Identity and Authentic Self-Expression• Walking away without considering yourself a failure• Purpose, calling, and choosing your own path• Music as a form of self-discovery• Confidence and self-actualization• Learning to embrace the gray areas of life If anything in this conversation resonates with you, take whatever perspective you need from it and apply it however it fits into your own life.
