    United Public Workers will commemorate 80 years of dedicated work in 2024. State Director Kalani Werner recently talked with podcast host Flash about UPW's history and the ongoing struggle for labor rights in Hawaii. A special edition of the Malama Pono will be published this summer to mark this significant milestone. United Public Workers originated with road workers in Hilo who fought for labor rights. Now, 80 years later, we are championing Temporary Hazard Pay, a benefit guaranteed in our contracts before the COVID-19 Pandemic Emergency in Hawaii. For our Kauai County workers, Kalani provides an essential update on new medical benefits negotiated with the Employer to provide full coverage for working families.     United 808 | Episode 4: Launch of the Jimmy Toledo Scholarship

    In this episode of the United 808 podcast, State Director Kalani Werner joins host Flash to discuss various topics. They introduce the Jimmy Toledo Scholarship, available to member dependents starting this summer. The scholarship was created by the UPW Foundation in honor of Jimmy Toledo, and the application deadline is May 20th. They also highlight some fundraisers to support the scholarship fund, such as the Oahu Bingo Fundraiser on April 19th and the Golf Tournament on July 12th. Additionally, they mention the UPW Store as another way to contribute to the fund. Moving on from the scholarship, they discuss the Unit 1 & Unit 10 Contract proposals for the next round of collective bargaining agreements, which will begin on July 1st, 2025. The deadline to submit proposals is April 30th, 2024. They also provide updates on unit elections, division officers, and state officer elections, all coming up at the end of this year.Finally, State Director Werner provides an update on the fight for Temporary Hazard Pay, a long-standing grievance against the employer for contractually owed payments.
