Is Your Young Baseball Player Hurt? An Orthopedic Surgeon Explains When to Worry

Orthopedic surgeon Dr. Jamie Rister sees three or four youth throwing injuries a week — and he says the real problem almost never starts with a single bad pitch. In this episode of Unleashing the Baseball Mindset, Dr. Rister, who trained under Dr. James Andrews and works with the U.S. Ski Team and many elite athletes, breaks down what's actually happening inside a young pitcher's shoulder and elbow during growth spurts, why "taking time off" often fails to fix anything, and the specific warning signs parents and coaches should never brush off as normal soreness. Dr. Kyle Stull and Coach Dylan Gautreaux dig into the youth baseball injury conversation from every angle: growth plate vulnerability during rapid growth spurts, the tradeoff between early throwing velocity and long-term shoulder health, why internal rotation loss shows up in the vast majority of throwers he examines, how pitch counts fall short of protecting arms on their own, and why the hardest part of his job is convincing parents to slow down. The conversation also covers deceleration training, posterior shoulder stress, baseline testing for at-risk pitchers, and Dr. Rister's single piece of advice for every baseball parent. 🔥 Want to help your athlete build stronger confidence, resilience, and mental toughness? The Truth About Cooperstown: Is the $25,000 Youth Baseball Experience Worth It?

Is the Cooperstown youth baseball experience truly worth the cost? After traveling to Cooperstown All-Star Village with his 12U team, Coach Dylan Gautreaux shares an honest account of one of youth baseball’s most celebrated tournaments. With approximately 120 teams competing, the event offered strong competition, team bonding, late-night games, pin trading, and the opportunity to face talented players from across the country. Dylan explains why the time together in the bunkhouses and on the field created memories his players will carry for years. The experience also came with serious concerns. Dylan discusses the approximately $25,000 team price tag, limited food options, restrictions on outside food, games ending after the dining hall closed, extreme heat and humidity, overcrowded facilities, insufficient supervision, and policies that appeared to prioritize profitability over athlete care. The conversation examines why families may feel pressured to describe an expensive experience positively, even when it fails to meet expectations. Is Cooperstown a once-in-a-lifetime baseball opportunity, or has its reputation become greater than the experience? Dr. Kyle Stull, Coach Dylan Gautreaux, and Shane Wallace also explore the mental-performance lessons players can take from the event. Dylan describes athletes who played with confidence, preparation, and freedom. The best teams appeared relaxed without losing focus, demonstrating how competence, repetition, and disciplined preparation build confidence. The episode reinforces an important lesson for young athletes: take practice seriously so you can play the game freely. Confidence is developed through preparation, experience, and proving you can perform under pressure. Cooperstown may not have delivered everything the coaches expected, but it gave the players meaningful competition, stronger relationships, unforgettable stories, and a clearer understanding of high-level baseball. Master the Basics: How Jim Malone Builds Mental Toughness in Baseball Players

Veteran strength and conditioning coach Jim Malone explains why lasting success in baseball is rarely built through complicated programs, flashy exercises, or performance shortcuts. It comes from mastering foundational skills, developing disciplined habits, and consistently doing the simple things exceptionally well. With more than 35 years of coaching experience, including 28 years in Major League Baseball, Jim has served as the head strength and conditioning coach for the Pittsburgh Pirates, New York Mets, and San Diego Padres. He has trained Hall of Famers, Cy Young Award winners, and All-Stars and currently works as a performance consultant with Major League Baseball and USA Baseball. In this conversation, Jim shares how strength and conditioning evolved across professional baseball and why relationships, communication, and explaining the “why” are essential to athlete development. He breaks down what it means to master the basics, from squatting, hinging, pushing, pulling, carrying, and rotating to throwing first-pitch strikes and developing a disciplined hitting approach. The conversation also explores early sport specialization, excessive competition schedules, year-round baseball, and the importance of recovery, sleep, nutrition, and diverse movement experiences. Jim explains why parents and coaches must serve as gatekeepers and help young athletes manage workloads before burnout or injury becomes the consequence. Most importantly, Jim reveals how physical training helps develop mental toughness. Training teaches athletes to tolerate discomfort, respond to failure, delay gratification, manage their time, and continue working when progress is not immediately visible. Simple does not mean easy. The real advantage comes from showing up, stacking productive days, controlling the controllables, and doing the necessary work consistently.
